Phases of the Moon A Math/Science Lesson Lindsay Bellman, Jess Zummo and Brianna Wilson

Phases New Moon- The moon is not visible in the sky. Except during a solar eclipse. Waxing Crescent- The moon is less than one-half illuminated by the sun but less than one quarter illuminated. Occurs when the moon’s illumination is increasing. First Quarter- The moon is one-half illuminated by the sun. Occurs when the moon’s illumination is increasing. Waxing Gibbous- The moon is more than one-half illuminated by the sun but not completely illuminated. Occurs when the moon's illumination is increasing.

Phases cont. Full Moon- The moon is totally visible in the sky. Except during a lunar eclipse. Waning Gibbous- The moon is more than one- half illuminated by the sun but not completely illuminated. Occurs when the moon's illumination is decreasing Third/ Last Quarter- The moon is one-half illuminated by the sun. Occurs when the moon's illumination is decreasing Waning Crescent- The moon is less than one- half illuminated by the sun but less than one quarter illuminated. Occurs when the moon's illumination is decreasing gE gE

The Moon The moon is the brightest object in the sky other than the Sun The phases are caused by its relative position to the Sun and Earth as it revolves around the Earth Position of the moon changes each day Goes through all the phases approximately every 28 days Blue moon: two full Moons during the same month

Integration Science: creating the Moon phases using Oreos Math: proportions with the Moon phases Social Studies: first mission to the Moon, Neil Armstrong ELA: creative writing piece about a mission to the Moon

Integration cont. Music: songs about the phases of the Moon, make their own song Art: make a moon phase mobile, drawing the Moon phases Movement: “Solar dance”, Moon dance, Moon walk

Safety Concerns Oreo lesson- teacher should monitor and assist students with using the plastic knife Listening to directions Pencils are not to be used as weapons or swords! Teacher should be aware of student health needs/allergies
