Somalia By: Patrick W. And John G.

Location Somalia is located on the eastern part of Africa, on the coast of the Indian Ocean, situated on the horn of East Africa. The capital of Somalia is Mogadishu which is located at 2°02′N 45°21′E. The location of Somalia is known as the Horn of Africa because of the shape of the area. http://www.1uptravel.com/worldmaps/somalia8.html

Place Northern Somalia is mountainous with plateaus ranging from 3,000 ft. and 7,000 ft. To the northeast is a dry dissected plateau with a max height of 8,250 ft. To the south and west all the way to the Shebeli River is one large plateau with max elevation of 2,250 ft. http://www.mapsofworld.com/flags/somalia-flag.html

Place Region between the Juba and Shebeli rivers is low agricultural land. Area that extends southwest of the Juba River to the Kenyan border is low pasture land. The Juba and Shebeli Rivers start in Ethiopia and flow toward the Indian Ocean. Near the coast of the country, near the Indian Ocean, there are two long, sandy plains. http://en.18dao.net/Map/Somalia

Place Most of the people in Somalia live in small villages scattered throughout the rural areas of the country. The few people that live in the urban areas in this country live in single-family houses. Many people that live either in the rural areas or the urban areas rarely ever have electricity, running water, and paved roads. http://mcelaney.com/20050507-Kenya3.php

Regions Somalis are classified as a Hamitic people with a Cushitic culture. Is thought that people of Somalia migrated from equatorial lakes of Africa to settle in the area of Somalia’s two rivers. Once settled they mixed with pastoral groups from the north and migrants from the Arabian Peninsula, the Persian Gulf, and perhaps Southeast Asia. http://www.antifascistencyclopedia.com/allposts/u-s-nato-allies-and-dyncorp-prepare-new-invasion-of-somalia

Human-Environment Interaction The climate in Somalia is mostly hot desert. Most people in Somalia’s jobs are farmers. With a lot of the country being desert, there is not that much safe drinking water. Only about twenty percent of the countries population have access to safe drinking water. http://www.zastavki.com/eng/Widescreen/wallpaper-5166.htm

Human-Environment Interaction In Somalia, the desert is expanding due to deforestation. This poses a threat to agricultural resources and human environment. Somalia is located on the East Coast of Africa. Major climatic factors are a year-round hot climate, seasonal monsoon winds, and irregular rainfall with recurring droughts. http://my.firedoglake.com/alexthurston/2009/07/23/greater-us-involvement-in-somalia/

Human-Environment Interaction Mean daily maximum temperatures range from 30C to 40C (85 F-105F), except at higher elevations and along the east coast. Mean daily minimums usually vary from about 15C to 30C (60F-85F). The southwest monsoon, a cool sea breeze, makes the period from about May to October the most pleasant season at Mogadishu. http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/hnx/newslet/spring03/dryheat.htm

Movement of People and Goods Somalia, like most other countries in Africa, was colonized by European nations during the late 1800s. Somalia exports livestock, pearls, precious stones, metals, animal skins, meat, and fruit. Somalia imports cereals, sugar, vegetables, live trees, plants, animals, vegetable fats and oils. Somalia does not have any popular travel destinations. http://www.cal.org/co/bantu/sbland.html

Human-Environment Interaction The December-February period of the northeast monsoon also is comfortable. The "angambili" periods that intervene between the two monsoons (October-November and March-May) are hot and humid. Many people In Somalia are getting sick and dying everyday. africanholocaust.net

Civil War In Somalia there is currently a civil war going on. The Somali Civil War started in 1992 and is currently still going on. Around 300,000-400,000 people have died during this war. In January 2007, the United States intervened into the Somali Civil War. http://www.theglobalobservatory.com/category/africa/
