Presentations and public speaking Gunnar Wettergren

Agenda Introduction Creating a presentation Deliver a presentation Different methods Make sure you think of

Which is worst? To die of to present in front of a group of people?

Why is it so scary? Afraid to fail Feel isolated Help I will say the wrong things, the audience wont like me, I cant do it Everyone hopes that I will fail 10 things to remember

Why do we need to know this Very important no matter what role you have to be able to present a product/thought and to convince others A big part of today’s work is about speaking

Practice makes perfect Grab all opportunities to practice Make sure that you evaluate each performance, what was good – not so good Do not hesitate to experiment Draw inspiration form others but do not copy, find your own style

Creating a presentation

Step 1 - How am I going to deliver the speech Manuscript Note cards Visual aids Improvisation

Manuscript Demand a lot of preparation and practice Write down the material using speaking language Do not just read word for word but leave room for improvisation Do not forget your audience

Note cards Use cards with supporting words or phrases that remind you of topics and points you need to cover or make One topic/point per card Make sure that you can read what you write

Visual aids Visual aids if used correctly can increase the interest in your presentation Examples OH-slides Power point / Canon Video/Film Physical objects Blackboard / Whiteboard

Improvisation One of the hardest methods Very effective and often generates the best results You can easily read the audience and adapt to their reactions Nothing for beginners

Step 2 – Prepare Depends on the method used Memorize – split up the material into bits Manuscript – Practice, Practice Note cards – Make sure you know the material well Create visual aids and props that you are going to need

Structure Opening Introduction Deliver message Conclude

Step 3 – Before the presentation Make sure you arrive well ahead of time Look through the room Test sound and other machines Calm yourself down and prepare mentally

Stage fright Dry mouth Sweaty hands Cold hands Feel sick Quick pulse Soft knees Anyone experienced this ?

To handle stress and stage fright Strategies that can be performed At anytime Before a speech Just before a speech During a speech One way is to joke about it (isn’t always appropriate)

Step 4 – During the presentation The audience Conquer the stage Use tricks to increase attention

The Audience Get them to participate Female/male audiences Be sharp and study their reactions to what you are saying

Stage hints A lot of people big movements Think about your body Use your body to increase the effect of your words Think of how you move What not to do

What to wear? Depends on the presentation Business Correct, formal Try and ahead of time find out what the company in question wears at work Make sure your cloths does not disturb the audience
