WHAT IS AN ALLUSION? They are simply remarks, insinuations, references, inferences and play on words. To understand allusions you must search for the meaning behind the remark Hint: look for proper nouns and capital letters Not to be confused with illusion, or something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality.

The hiker had a Titanic problem on his hands. Why name a ship Titanic? Crossing the river required a Herculean effort. Name something that would be Herculean to accomplish.
