Marine Science and Outdoor Studies Year 9 Specialist Program ‘ Our Shores – Past, Present and Future

Changes over time to the local area cultural activity, fishing…. Self – Sufficient Living Commercial Fishing (canned fishing industry) Leisure

The Task Understand how the cultural activity of ‘fishing’ in Mandurah has changed over time and connects with the past. To demonstrate your understandings you will refer to source material as evidence to discuss the statement, ‘The cultural activity of fishing in the Mandurah area has changed over time from pre European settlement 1830’s until present.‘ Your discussion will be completed as an in class essay. To assist you to gather relevant information, you will visit the Mandurah Community Museum and have the opportunity to view and analyse various sources of evidence.

CriteriaMark Five W’s Chart - You will demonstrate the skill of note taking using the Five W’s framework, focus questions and collecting relevant information to support the elaboration within your essay. Comments /6 5 Paragraph Essay Outline – You will demonstrate the skills of planning an essay using a framework and including dot points. Comments /3 Essay – You will discuss with clarity ‘The cultural activity of fishing in the Mandurah area has changed over time from pre European settlement 1830’s until present.‘ - You will refer to primary sources of evidence to support your discussion of the topic (examples may include objects from the past, artefacts, oral histories and photographs) Comments /12 /4 Self Reflection -Competed by you after completing all aspects of the task and to include a score you estimate you may achieve. How did it connect? Local area – ‘Our Shores, Past, Present and Future Cultural activity within a marine environment. MSOS principles – sustainability and human impact Changes over time (pre settlement to present day)

How did it connect? Historical Skills - Identifying, locating and evaluating sources of evidence (photos, artefacts, oral histories, objects) and then using it to answer inquiry questions. - Exploring cause and effect relationships to explain why the cultural activity changed over time. Referring to key events and the actions of individuals and groups. - Explaining understandings and communicating by history essay format.

How did it connect? Historical Knowledge and Understanding (snapshot) Overview 1. Industrial Revolution (push and pull factors) as reasons for settlement 2. Nature and extent of movement of people in the period (convicts, free settlers and first contacts) Depth Study (Making a Better World - Movement of peoples ) 1. Investigating the experience of free settlers, their reactions on arrival, including the Australian experience. Halls Cottage tour connects explains their responses to the natural environment and climate. 2. Describing the short term and long term impact of settlers on the group of Indigenous locals.
