Overview of workshop Evidence base Workplace health offer Physical activity offer Case study Action planning Next steps

What does the evidence say? Established relationship between lifestyle related risk factors (diet, smoking, inactivity, obesity) and productivity, absenteeism and health claims at work. An active workforce can reduce days off sick by up to 27% and broader absenteeism by up to 20% NICE (May 2008) The average Brit gives up exercise at the age of 34, with men giving up their regular exercise regime five years earlier than their female counterparts at the age of 32 while women carry on until at least 37 Benenden Healthcare (August 2007) Local authorities now have the freedom, responsibility and funding to innovate and develop their own ways of improving public health in their local areas

Why the workplace as a setting for intervention?

Why should businesses care? Unhealthy workforce costs employers financially The do-nothing strategy of waiting for sickness isn’t cost neutral – it costs businesses Lifestyle related risk factors and behaviours of employees as well as unhealthy work environments and practices drive costs up. High risk employees incur high costs whatever the outcome measure: pharmaceutical, absenteeism, compensation costs or productivity

Excess Productivity Loss Productivity Loss (%) Base Cost Number of Health Risks (Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine 2005;47: (n = 28,375)) Productivity decreases with number of health risks
