Funding Opportunities for Supporting NHD/WBD Stewardship and Maintenance NHD/WBD Stewardship Conference Paul Caffrey April 16, 2009

WyGISC is an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Wyoming focused on:  research & development  education  service & outreach related to geospatial information development, access, and use

My role at WYGISC-  Research Scientist  Ed Coordinator  ESRI Ed-Site License Administrator  Grant Writer and Project Manger Involved in WBD & NHD development and stewardship since (Wyoming, California, Alaska)

Wyoming NHD/WBD Grants-  WBD/NHD funding through Cooperative Agreements/Grants with-  BLM  USGS,  WY-WBD, EPA/DEQ (Clean Water Act (CWA) 319)

Wyoming NHD/WBD Grants cont…  Work share efforts from- USFS, USGS, NRCS, neighboring states  In-kind matching from local, state, federal entities  NSDI Partnership grants  Enhancements- dams and gaging stations  Stewardship- Promotional

Successful Efforts-  Highly dependent on coordination and collaborative efforts of all involved.  Collaborative proposals and projects have better likelihood to be funded and successfully completed.  Leverage other existing efforts/projects to gain interest for support.

Considerations-  Don’t over promise and under deliver (Can always modify and do more)  Estimate coordination involved, then double it

Consider working with Universities  Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Units (CESU)  National Network is a network of cooperative units established to provide research, technical assistance, and education to resource and environmental managers.  17.5% Indirect rate  Student internships, RAs, GAs  Current and future users of spatial technologies and framework data

National Stewardship and Maintenance for NHD/WBD- Collectively, there is a lot we can learn about funding opportunities  Lessons Learned…  Challenges…  Sources…
