DAILY ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How did Mao Zedong impact the people of China and its transition into the 21 st century?

COMMUNIST REVOLUTION  Mao Zedong gets power. Mao Zedong  wins support of peasants by collecting land from landlords and redistributing it to poor peasants  Mao leads Long March – 90,000 communist supporters over thousands of miles. 6,000 marchers survived.

COMMUNIST REVOLUTION  SG: Mao Zedong led the Chinese communists during most of the 20 th century.  SG: Mao and the communists took control of china right after WW II.

COMMUNIST REVOLUTION  Civil War (Nationalists vs. PLA) resumes.  Chiang Kai-shek and Nationalist supporters flee to Taiwan.  October 1, 1949, Mao declares China communist “People’s Republic of China”.  Mao says peasants share all the land.

GREAT LEAP FORWARD  Mao mobilized masses to modernize China – construction of dams, reservoirs, railroads.  People gave up their land, so there was no private property.  In 1958, Chinese leader Mao Zedong started an economic plan to quickly modernize the country. The plan was called the Great Leap Forward.

GREAT LEAP FORWARD  Organized China into communes where people lived together.  Ordered people to study communist values and rid themselves of improper (anti-communist) thoughts.

GREAT LEAP FORWARD  Plan failed.  There wasn’t equality.  Former landowners publicly “denounced”  Corrupt officials  Hundreds of thousands of people died of starvation SG: The Great Leap Forward was unsuccessful because people wanted to work for themselves and make a profit.

VOCABULARY Cultural Revolution — a radical reform in China initiated by Mao Zedong in 1965 and carried out largely by the Red Guard.

CULTURAL REVOLUTION SG: When Mao Zedong tried to eliminate anyone that criticized the government, this period of time was called the Cultural Revolution.

CULTURAL REVOLUTION  Mao wanted to get rid of the “Four Olds” – Old ideas, old culture, old customs, old habits.  Many Communist Party officials opposed Mao’s ideas.

CULTURAL REVOLUTION  SG: The name of the new army of young people Mao used to enforce his policies in the 1960s was called The Red Guard.  They humiliated, imprisoned, beat and killed thousands of “enemies” of the revolution: educated people, teachers, city dwellers, corrupt Communist Officials (and those rumored to be corrupt).

CULTURAL REVOLUTION Red Guard traveled the country raiding homes, museums and historical monuments, destroying anything associated w/the Four Olds.

CULTURAL REVOLUTION  Military and police ordered not to interfere with the Red Guards.  Communist leaders lost control of the Cultural Revolution.  Once control was lost, then it was time for the Red Guard to disband.

POWER STRUGGLE  Mao dies in 1976 and there is a power struggle.

POWER STRUGGLE  His wife, Jiang Qing and 3 colleagues gain power – Gang of Four.  Gang of Four arrested for trying to overthrow the government and causing the deaths of 34,000 people during the cultural revolution.  The perspective today The perspective today

ECONOMIC REFORMS OF DENG XIAOPING  In 1979 Deng Xiaoping (who had disagreed with and dismissed from his official position by Mao) becomes leader of China.  Deng shifts focus on economic reform:  some privately owned farm land  4 Modernizations: which focused on science, industry, technology & defense

PROTEST FOR DEMOCRACY AT TIANANMEN SQUARE 1989 SG: The students who were protesting in 1989 for greater political freedom in Tiananmen Square in Beijing were attacked by Chinese troops and many were killed or arrested.

PROTEST FOR DEMOCRACY AT TIANANMEN SQUARE  Deng sent the military who killed 700 – 3,000 students, other protesters and bystanders.  SG: The Tiananmen demonstrators had a statue, Goddess of Democracy, that was modeled after The Statue of Liberty.
