Overview Endnote is a bibliographic software program that is used to develop a personal library of references. Endnote is also used to create and format citations for academic papers and publications. Objectives Create an EndNote personal library and enter your references in it. Use EndNote with Microsoft Word to create and format citations. User Prerequisites Endnote Version X Familiarity with the Windows operating system Microsoft Word 2000, XP, or 2003 Estimated Time to Complete Tutorial: 10 minutes

Getting Started First View a Sample EndNote Library Page Open the EndNote program Click on File in the upper left hand corner of the tool bar From the dropdown menu choose the sample library c:\ProgramFiles\...\Paleo Did you do it correctly? Follow the link below to see. Click here to view a sample library page – Paleo.enlhere

Viewing a Sample Library Page The library window displays a list of references. Note the headings across the top of the library window. image icon PDF icon author, year, title, journal, reference type and URL.

Starting Your Own Library First, choose a name for your reference library. For example, I chose Adult Education as my name. Next, go to File on Toolbar; Choose ‘Open New Library.’ The “New Reference Box’ pops up. Enter the name of your new library and where you want it saved. I chose the desktop. Note: all files for your Endnote Libraries will end in.enl (EndNote Library).

Selecting an Output Style ‘Output Styles’ define the formatting of in-text citations, footnotes, and references. After you have started your library you want to choose an ‘Output Style.’ Choose an ‘Output Style’ from the dropdown menu on the right side of the EndNote main tool bar. Note: I have chosen Adult Education Quarterly for my output style.

Adding References You are now ready to add references to your library. Go to ‘File’ on the EndNote Tool Bar - Open - and choose your library file. Mine is Adult Education so I choose that one. Your empty library screen pops up ready to fill with references!

Reference Page Go to ‘Reference’ on the Tool Bar and choose ‘Add New Reference.’ Choose the type of reference you are entering (book, journal, conference proceedings, online database, etc.) and enter that information to the reference page.

Building your Library After adding your references you’ll notice that the reference is put into correct citation format for the publication you chose in outputs; in my case it is APA style for Adult Education Quarterly

Using the Style Manager If you want to research and write an article for a different publication i.e., Advanced Nursing Science, you will want to begin a new library adding references that will be in the correct citation format for that publication. Go to the Toolbar and click on Edit. Choose ‘Output Style’ and then choose ‘Open Style Manager’ from the submenu. Choose the publication and you will see the citation format.

Cite While You Write (CWYW) The CWYW feature allows you to insert citations into your Word documents anytime during the writing process. CWYW automatically builds a reference list from the citations you insert. To access CWYW, open the Word document to which you want to add a citation. From the Word Tools Menu, choose EndNotes. A submenu with the CWYW command appears - click on it.

Inserting Citations Open the EndNotes Library you want to use. Click on the magnifying glass in the tool bar to open the find citation dialogue box. Type in a key word such as the author to find the citation, then highlight it. Go to your Word document and position the cursor where you want to insert the citation and then click ‘insert.’

Review: True or False The first step to begin a new library is choosing a name for your library After you name your library you need to choose the output style, or citation format for the items you will add You add references to your library by clicking file –open on the EndNote tool bar The Style Manager doesn’t allow you to choose a citation style according to publications Cite While You Write allows you to insert correctly formatted citations directly into in your Word document.

Sorry That is not correct.

Yes! You are correct.

Summary In this tutorial you have learned : 1.To create an Endnote Library and enter your references in the citation style of your choice. 2.To use the Style Manager to build a reference library according to a publication’s format style. 3.To use the Cite While You Write feature to add correctly formatted citations directly into your Word document.
