Women in today’s Lithuania Women make up 52,8% of the labour force More women than men: - have a university degree - 58,6% - are college graduates - 70%

Women in today’s Lithuania However, women’s wages are only 78% of that of men. Why? - in both economic and political life there are far less women in top positions (31 of 141 MPs in 2004 were women ) - traditionally, “women’s jobs” pay less

Women in today’s Lithuania Minimum wage of 500 Litas (142 EURO) per month 46% of women are the only bread winners in families About 600 children annually are taken into state care institutions due to family poverty

Women in today’s Lithuania - Employment 53,2% of all registered unemployed people are women of which: – only 20% receive unemployment benefits – 9,1% have an university degree

Women in transport Women make up 32,3% of the employed workforce The gender pay gap in transport is 84,8% to the detriment of women Women earn 1365 Litas while men earn 1409 Litas

Women in transport - Restructuring Vilnius Bus Depot Until 1 January 2005 – of 45 conductors/ticket controllers 43 were women As for April 2005: 12 - transferred to work as cleaners 1 - to security 1 - cloak room 8 - retired Only 9 kept their job (mothers with young children or women with less than 12 months left till early retirement)
