Honors College – Presentation Outline What’s New? Nuts & Bolts Getting Started And Continuing In The Honors College What Can You Do To Support High Achieving Students? Partnership Opportunities Questions, Comments, Feedback?

Honors College - What’s New? Presented last at ACN in Spring 2008  Received multiple requests for a review Updates  New location – tour of Honors House available after ACN meeting  Dramatic increase in enrollment  New partnerships with various School/Colleges  Honors acceptance independent of EPT

Honors College – Nuts & Bolts What is the Honors College experience?  Active learning environment which focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking  Small seminars limited to 15 students  Close contact with professors  Non-seminars as an option to complete the Honors College degree include study abroad, independent study, graduate course, research and tutorials; Senior Honors Project or Thesis

Honors College – Nuts & Bolts How does Honors work?  All Honors courses satisfy GER  Honors College curriculum Honors 200 (HU) 3-6 credits Upper-level Honors & departmental Honors seminars (HU, SS, NS, A) at least 9 credits Non-Seminar Options up to 9 credits  Ideally one Honors course each semester  21 credits total to earn the Honors College degree

Honors College – Recruitment First Year Students  26 ACT Composite  Top 40% of HS class, if HS ranks  EPT score determines which semester the student begins their first Honors 200 course Continuing UWM or Transfer Students  Cumulative GPA of at least 3.5  Met the University English requirement  Ideally having completed no more than 40 credits  Contingency admits

Honors College – Continuing The Honors College requires students to meet the following cumulative GPA/enrollment criteria: (as of Spring 2012) First Semester Freshmen3.0 Freshmen3.2 Sophomores3.3 Juniors3.4 Seniors/To Graduate3.5 Students must earn at least a B- in an Honors course to earn Honors credit. Students who do not take Honors courses for two consecutive semesters will be considered "inactive" and dropped from the Honors College. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with their respective School/College advisor and then their Honors College advisor each semester.

Honors College – Referrals We welcome referrals from you! No pressure – the Honors College would love to hear about great students you advise that may meet Honors admissions criteria – just refer them and we’ll do the rest. Feel free to either Kate Coffaro or Shannon Byrne Irwin with the student’s name and Student ID  We will follow up with the student with more details about the Honors College.

Honors College – Advising Remember – ideally reserving GER for Honors credits Honors courses may satisfy some major requirements and students may seek substitutions School/College individual meetings  Recent meetings with several School/Colleges proved very successful Collaborative advising relationship  Supporting our high achieving students together

Honors College - Partnership Honors visible on transcript  Sub Advisors – both Kate & Shannon listed; not specifically assigned, based on availability  “H” as in Honors, appears between the credit number and grade for each course Honors advisors are more than willing to meet with new staff or present your staff meetings. Honors College - Partnership Honors advisors a list of current active Honors students every semester to each School/College.  Many advising offices flag Honors student files. An Honors College Course Description Booklet is ed to Honors students and advisors in the weeks prior to Priority Registration – feel free to reference this resource.
