Her mother was not in good mental health, and her father was an abusive alcoholic. When their family was in Worcester they had 2 more children. Dorothea had to take care of her younger siblings. Dorothea wanted to read, and teach.

Life in Dorothea’s household Dorothea’s household was “unstable.” Fighting took place in her household a lot. When the fighting got out of control, she would go to her grandmothers house. The members in her family didn’t get along well.

Dorothea’s School life. Dorothea was taught how to read and write, by her father. Which made Dorothea ahead of everyone else when she entered school. Dorothea then developed a passion for reading and teaching She then taught her siblings how to read

When Dorothea got older When Dorothea became older, she was a teacher, nurse, humanitarian, and social reformer for the mentally ill. She enjoyed helping people! At the age of 54, Dorothea had traveled half of the United States and Europe inspecting institutions, jails, etc. for mistreatment.
