DRUGS IN SPORT ANOTHER ETHICAL ISSUE IS DRUGS AND SPORT – LESSON 21 WHAT IS A DRUG? TO PRODUCE EXPECTED AND WELCOME PHYSICAL AND OR PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS ON THE PERSON TAKING IT.

 DEFINITIONS  PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS- DRUGS THAT CAN IMPROVE AN ATHLETE’S PERFORMANCE.  FOR EXAMPLE  STEROIDS – ARTIFICIAL MALE HORMONES THAT ALLOW THE PERFORMER TO TRAIN HARDER AND LONGER AND TO GET BIGGER AND STRONGER.  HGH AND THE PROBLEM IN THE NEXT OLYMPICS – PROBLEM OF DETECTION.

WE ALSO HAVE….  PROHIBITIVE METHODS  BLOOD DOPING – REMOVING BLOOD AFTER TRAINING AT HIGH ALTITUDE. THE BLOOD IS STORED AND THEN REINFUSED SHORTLY BEFORE COMPETITION IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE AEROBIC CAPACITY BY INCREASING THE NUMBER OF RED BLOOD CELLS. BLOOD DOPING IS VERY DIFFICULT TO DETECT.

WHY?  DISCUSS WHY SPORTSMAN TAKE DRUGS – LIST IN THE FORM OF A TABLE – ARRGUMENTS/REASONS FOR AND AGAINST DRUGS AND THEN COMPARE IN BOOK. ALSO, OFFER SOME POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS.

THIS COULD BE YOU!

 WHAT SOLUTINS COULD BE OFFERED TO THE CONTINUING PROBLEM OF DRUGS IN SPORT?  WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST DRUGS IN SPORT  SHOW ON THE JUICE VIDEO

ANOTHER ISSUE…..  As testing systems and random testing intensify and known drugs become easily detectable, new drugs become available and improved masking drugs help users to avoid detection.  The substance availability hypothesis ties in closely with positive deviance, where an athlete is over-committed to the sport ethic and is willing to risk all for the opportunity to perform at the highest level. – With little regard to the consequences!

HOMEWORK  WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF MODERN TECHNOLOGICAL PRODUCTS – WHY HAVE PERFORMANCES IMPROVED OVER THE LAST 50 YEARS?
