Italy’s Performing Arts  Italy has many performing arts and cultural events during the year. Performances are often held in historic theaters or beautiful outdoor settings.  Opera, theater, music, and dance performances are just the few Arts that Italy is most fond of.

Opera- L’Opera  Italian opera  both the art of opera in Italy  opera in the Italian language.  Many famous operas in Italian were written by foreign composers  Handel, Gluck and Mozart.  Works by native Italian composers of the 19th and early 20th centuries  Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi and Puccini  amongst the most famous operas ever written and today are performed in opera houses across the world. 

Theater- Il teatro  La Commedia dell’arte  a form of theatre characterized by masked “types” which began in Italy in the 16th century and was responsible for the advent of the actresses and improvised performances based on sketches or scenarios.  Many Famous Italian play writers:  Luigi Pirandello  Dario Fo  Eduardo De Filippo  Carlo Goldoni  Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore (Six Characters in Search of an Author  presents the playwright's views about the isolation of the individual from society and from himself. This play within a play chronicles six characters as they seek an author to tell their story, and to present their real lives on stage. 

Music - La Musica  The music of Italy  ranges across a broad spectrum of opera and instrumental classical music and a body of popular music drawn from both native and imported sources.  Musica  traditionally been one of the cultural markers of Italian national and ethnic identity and holds an important position in society and in politics.  Instrumental and vocal classical music is an iconic part of Italian identity, spanning experimental art music and international fusions to symphonic music and opera. 
