Monitors and Sound Systems Section 3A

Objectives List the two most commonly used types of computer monitors. Explain how a CRT monitor displays images. Identify two types of flat-panel monitors and explain their differences. List four characteristics you should consider when comparing monitors. Explain how a computer outputs sound.

Monitors Two basic types of monitors ◦Cathode ray tube ◦Flat-panel display All monitors are categorized by the way they display color ◦Monochrome monitors ◦Grayscale monitors ◦Color monitors

CRT Monitors Disadvantage of CRT CRT monitors are big and take up desktop space and can be difficult to move. CRT monitors require a lot of power to run.

Flat-Panel Monitors Most common flat-panel monitor is liquid crystal display (LCD) Disadvantage ◦Image can be difficult to see in bright lights ◦Limited viewing angle, the angle shrinks as you increase your angle to the screen Main categories of liquid crystal displays: ◦Passive matrix LCD ◦Active matrix LCD

Other Types of Monitors Paper-White Displays Electroluminescent (ELD) Displays Plasma/Gas Plasma Displays

The Video Controller Video controllers feature their own video RAM or VRAM

Self Check 1. ____________monitors are used for text-only displays where the user does not need to view color graphics. 2. In a monitor, a(n) ___________ aims a beam of electrons at the front of the monitor. 3. A disadvantage of LCD monitors is their limited ____________. monochrome Electron gun Viewing angle

Digital Light Projectors Digital light projectors replace old fashion slide projectors and overhead projectors The presentation is projected onto “the big screen” directed from the computer.
