Snipe Fleet Annual Fleet Meeting

Agenda State of the Fleet – Membership – Marketing and Growth – Fleet Awards and beyond – Finances – Loaner Boat Program 2014 Regatta Schedule Regatta Planning Other fleet business 2

State of the Fleet Strong local fleet which represents the best dingy sailing to be had in the area Large number of boats sailed locally Local Invitational regattas with strong participation Diverse set of sailors with strong mix of new vs old boats, sailors, and skills Supported by a strong US and International Class

Membership ~22 boats on the lot (plus Gavin, Marshall, Scott) ? # of boats at nearby homes Growth Areas – New members actively sought or seeking us – Ex-college level sailors showing interest – High school sailors participating and interested – Junior skipper and crews participating

Membership Activity from Marketing and Growth Programs 2010 – Marsh McJunkin (new to club, new storage) – Chuck Moses (new to club, new storage) 2011 – Charles Ryan (new club, new storage, new fleet) – Chris Jankowski (new club, new storage, new fleet) 2012 – Jose Fuentes (new club, new storage, new fleet – Randy Holl (bought Russ’ boat) – Scott Williamson (bought Aaron’s boat) – James Perva (bought Marsh’s boat) – Doug Frazee (bought Chuck’s boat) – Stephan Marculewicz (bought David Watson’s boat) – David Watson (upgraded to newer JibTech) We had a lot of turnover in boats this year 5 boats flipped (NO LOSS OF BOATS!!!) 1 new boat to the lot We have several older boats for sale Jon Virden Ted Stevenson Eugene (?) Charles Ryan (?) We have several potential fleet candidates Jason Hill (coached and used Chuck’s boat) Jon Lowe (has chartered boat) David Neal (used loaner at FD and after) Need your help to identify opportunities to promote the fleet with other potential candidates. You are the best way to promote the fleet.

Snipe Fleet Marketing and Promotion for Growth The snipe fleet at SSA uses multiple programs to help grow the fleet which also helps grow the club membership base – Loaner Boat Program – Class Travelling Snipe Fleet – Active development of fleet members We market the fleet as: – Strongest dingy fleet in Annapolis – 24 boats on the lot and many more in the area – Competitive sailors at the top of the class to learn from – Clinics to support fleet skills development – Large fleet with top, middle, and less active sailors to provide for all levels of sailing to have someone to compete with – 2 large invitational regattas per year drawing average of 30 boats and 20 boats – Good fleet size in SSA series races – Active TESOD fleet

2013 and Future Regatta Awards In the Future we could have: – Fleet 532 High Point Champ (CBYRA-style) – Classic Boat Champ – Participation Awards: – Ironman/IronWomen Award Top skipper sailed in most events Top Crew sailed in most events Recognition of skipper/crew sailing in all events – Junior Skipper Award Top skipper for regatta and for year Recognition award all junior skippers – Junior Crew Award Top skipper for regatta and for year Recognition award all junior skippers – Recognition Awards Special deeds 2013 season awards: – SSA Fleet Champion 1 st – Henry Filter 2 nd – Lisa Pline 3 rd – Russ Wesdyk – High Point Champ – (Add Oxford Regatta) 1 st – Henry Filter 2 nd – Lisa Pline 3 rd – Russ Wesdyk – Classic Boat Champ – 1 st – Randy Holl 2 nd – Chris Ryan 3 rd – Scott Williamson – IronMan (includes Oxford – Tied at 5 of 6 regattas) 1 st – Mark Furhmann Recog – Russ Wesdyk – Junior Skipper Matt Schoene, Mike Carr, Edgar ? – Junior Crew Sarah, Katie, Nicole, Elizabeth, etc – Recognition Awards Alex Stout – rigging support Jon Anthony – fleet captain support (me) Jon Virden – TESOD participation driver Currently we only have an SSA fleet champion award which requires SSA membership and doesn’t support local fleet 532 members like Gavin/Holly, Marshall, and others.

SSA Fleet Championship Scoring Must Race in 3 events to qualify DNC penalty = # of boats registered (at individual event) +3 Proposed Change to SSA Fleet Championship Scoring Must Race in 3 events to qualify DNC penalty = # of boats registered across all events +1 (net +17 for 2014)

Finances Membership Dues = $ – Core Fleet Members ( 13 members paid vs 20 last year) – Loaner Boat and TSF members (1 new fleet members ?) Parts Store Sales = Net $ – Sails sold = $ (1 sets plus 1 main) – Hardware sold = $300 (rudder) Invitational Regattas = Net $ – Colonial Cup - net $4.27 – Frigid Digit - net $415 Loaner Boat Program = Net Loss of -$ 0 – Incomes = $20 (1 members) – Expenses = $0 Insurance (Russ) Storage (Russ) Social Events = -$ Misc expenses = -$151 – SCIRA Fleet Dues = ($115) – Bank Fees = ($36) Continued strong financial growth year over year Account balance end of 2011 = $ Account balance end of 2013 = $ net increase $ Account balance end of 2014 = $ net increase $ Where does the money come from?

Loaner Boat Program Annual Expenses = ~$678 to $ – $543 - Storage – $100 - Insurance – $35 - SCRIA decal – ? ~$200 - Maintenance Annual Income Potentials Max Charter Opportunity = $315 – $50.00/2-day event – $35.00/1-day event – CC, FD, Oxford, Sp, Su, Fall New fleet members needed – $ expense after charters – $ = 23 members * $20 Represents an investment by the fleet for future growth but takes care and feeding to be effective both financially and to achieve growth

Loaner Boat Financing Current membership levels do not fully fund the expenses of the loaner boat Without charter fees, or new member fees, or other income, the expense of the loaner boat will drain the current account balance – In 5 years given current budget – in 10 years if no other expenses are paid by the fleet except loaner To break even, the loaner boat would have to be fully chartered at every snipe event and an additional generation of 28 temporary fleet members would be needed each year which is probably not realistic

Proposed Finance Increases Loaner Boat Charter Fee Current:$35 (1-day) and $50 (2-day) Proposed:$50 (1-day) and $100 (2-day) Maintenance Need to inspect and identify repairs/upgrades Need to complete repairs Need to maintain after each use Use Management Need to coordinate requests for use Checkout requesters to ensure safe use Collect Fleet Dues and Sign Waiver Need to inspect after use for repairs Loaner Boat Program Coordination
