Presentation transcript:

Notice that you can spell dormitory with exactly the same letters as dirty room. Dirty room is an anagram for dormitory. See if you can find an anagram for your own name. Use just your first name, or use both your first name and last name if that’s easier. Come up with 10 different anagrams. Tues. Aug. 25

Wed. Aug. 26 Punctuation marks are used to convey tone and meaning that aren't conveyed by words alone. For example, a period signals the end of a thought, and an exclamation mark adds emphasis to what comes before it. Over the past five or ten years, and instant messaging have led to the invention of emoticons, which are similar to punctuation marks in their function list as many as you can, and briefly define their meaning. Also, write a short sentence that includes a few emoticons.

Thur. Aug. 27 People often mix up effect and affect. Effect is primarily a noun meaning “result,” and Affect is usually a verb meaning “to influence.” Fill in the blanks with affect or effect: The factory owner’s huge donation did not _____ the senator’s vote against the Clean Air Act. Scientists are still determining the long-term ________s of smoking. Scientists study how smoking _______s the lungs A cause-and- ________ relationship exists between exercise and weight loss. The story of his childhood _____ed me deeply. What _________ do you think George’s arrival will have on Vera?

Fri. Aug. 28 What has been your most humiliating high school or middle school experience? Write a short, possibly funny, story about it.

Mon. Aug. 31 You have been chosen to describe your school in a brochure that will be given to students who live across the country. Assume that your readers know nothing about your city or school. Address the following topics: Dialect Dress Mannerisms Customs Character types Groups/Cliques Best thing Worst thing The one thing your readers should know

Tues. Sept. 1 Many names have special meaning or history. For example, the name Hannah means “favor” or “grace.” The name Vito means “life.” Write about your own name. Who named you? What does your name mean? Does it have a special ethnic or religious significance? Are you named after someone in your family? If you could change your name, would you and why?

Wed. Sept. 2 You’re is the contraction of you are (You’re coming tonight, aren’t you?). Your is a possessive pronoun (Are you bringing your brother?). If you’re not sure which is correct, try substituting you are. If that sounds wrong, you know you should use your instead. ___ son has a serious behavior problem, probably because ___ much too indulgent with him. ___ child- rearing methods are too relaxed. ___ making a mistake if you think ____ devil-may-care approach to parenting will work. ___ son doesn’t respect you, and if this lack of discipline continues, ____ going to wind up bailing him out of jail one day.

Thur. Sept. 3 The popular board game Scrabble assigns different point values to different letters depending on how commonly they occur in words. The point system is as follows: 1 point: a, e, I, l, n, o, r, s, t, u 2 points: d, g 3 points: b, c, f, m, p 4 points: h, v, w, y 5 points: k 8 points: j, x 10 points: q, z Calculate how many points you would get for spelling your own name. Think of fifteen words that have the same point value as your name.

Fri. Sept. 4 Coordinating conjunctions- and, but, for, or, nor, so, yet- help join two independent clauses together. For example, William begged for months, and finally his mother relented. Write a paragraph about what you usually do after school. Use as many coordinating conjunctions as possible.

Tues. Sept. 8 A simile is a comparison using like or as, as in my heart is like cellophane. Come up with five words and five phrases to complete this simile: My heart is like………
