Sleep Cycle – iPhone App Starter: What might the following app show us about sleep? How do you think the app works?

Lesson objectives  To review the role of psychoanalysts.  To re-examine the case of Little Hans and to write a letter from Max Graf to Freud highlighting Little Hans’ symptoms.  To complete the ‘10 things you need to know about sleep documentary’.

The Role of the Psychoanalyst Which one is a psychoanalyst/psychiatrist/psychologist?  A ________ is a physician who deals with mentally ill patients. They are MDs, so they can prescribe medication. As a result, they usually deal with clinical issues such as schizophrenia and manic-depression whose treatments tend to require medication. ________ are not MDs, and they tend to deal more with emotional issues than with clinical issues. For example, a person experiencing low self-esteem would visit a ________ rather than a ________ because they do not have anything physically wrong with them; they just need to talk things out. A person with schizophrenia would visit a ________ because they would need medication to correct the chemical imbalance in their brain. ________ follow Freud's theories that painful childhood memories contained in the unconscious are the cause of mental illness. ________ are like ________ in that they usually deal with emotional issues and do not prescribe medication. However, their approach is different from that of conventional psychologists. ________ is a method of searching through a person's unconscious memories for the source of their current difficulties, rather than focusing on conscious memories. ________ also tend to meet much more often with their clients. Rather than meeting only once a week (as is common with ________), they usually prefer to meet as often as three to five times a week

Write a letter… Write two letters, one from Max Graf (Little Hans’ Father) to Freud and then Freud’s reply. Your letter from Max Graf should contain: 1) Why you need Freud’s help; 2) What you’ve noticed about your sons behaviour? 3) Little Hans’ dreams Your letter from Freud should contain: 1) You initial interpretation of Little Hans’ behaviour; 2) How you [Freud] think you could help?
