Inshore Image collection standards Purpose  Based of the growth in use of images, suggest ‘Standard Practices’ for discussion.  Adopt and recommend these standards nationally as part of the coordination in the development of the Natural Image Analysis Laboratory

Coincidental Projects  Natural Image Analysis Lab – Image Archive  Large Vessel –Discovery Corridor –Fish Habitat –Fisheries (Clams, Sea Cucumber) –Deep Sea Corals  Inshore Vessels –Aquaculture interactions (research, regulatory) –Fisheries (Salmon, Lobster, Clams, Shrimp, Cukes) –Sea Dumping –Sea Grass Survey –Pockmarks

Image Data Management Use of GIS Planning Mission Management Processing and Analysis Presentation of results

Integrated Software  ArcGIS  CAROL  ClasEvent  ClassAct Mapper  URCHIN

Coordinated processing

Image Management Plan  Implement standards of collection  Develop integrated MapObjects (ESRI), CAROL, ClasEvent based on URCHIN  Develop test desktop to Internet Mapping Server still image archive  Propose establishing a national set of standards for DFO Science  Champion national Natural Image Analysis Laboratory CoE

Proposition  Users –discuss and refine standard collection methods –Users include standards in planning their program and setting cost –Users implement standards  Image Management –Advice –Software support –Long term storage

Collection Media and Handling Still  Images collected on a camera should be at the highest resolution possible.  Synchronize camera clock to PC, GPS and UTC.  Filenames should be descriptive, ideally JULDay + UTCtime.EXT (EXT refers to the ‘native’ format generated by the camera.  After download, copies should be made to CD or DVD as backup.  Original CDS should be kept as back-up and forwarded with appropriate metadata to Image Management for long term storage  Any images saved as a JPG will undergo a new compression. When editing a JPG convert image to BMP, do edits then choose the correct JPG Video  Collect moving images to digital tape. Tape inscription should include: Date, Vessel, Station Name/#, Project Id and owner.  Setup Outland to encode GPS time, Lat and Long to the top of the image  Encode serial interface to image using SvModem  Collect ClasEvent* information in real- time. The purpose is to have a minimum interpretation and GPSTime linked for future Discovery.  Make copy of tape and forward with appropriate metadata to Image Management for long term storage

Minimum Standards What needs to be collected and how  GPS should be Differential by use of WASS, dGPS by use of wide area or local station  GPS should be set to upload all available NMEA to a file. Ideally, 1 second intervals of whatever is available. Regulus can be set to log all incoming NMEA. Based on their filenaming standard we recommend that the filename should include a vessel code and Julian Day (eg. Vessel code + JULDAYx.yyT, or 18DA277a.05T (18DA = CCGS Dawson, 277 = Jul day, x= alphanumeric increment for files saved in a given day, YYT = 2 digit year + T= Text)  Sounder should be attached to the GPS and broadcast using the correct NMEA string  Latitude and Longitude accuracy must be set to maximum decimal places and preferably in decimal degrees.  GPS systems and any computers used should be synchronized and set to transmit in UTC.  The GPS receiving antenna should be set as close to the drop point of the instrument, a track point locator attached or offset information provided.  The receiving computer should have at least 2 serial ports or USB multiport capability
