What is sin?

Sin is: the vehicle that transports me away from God. It increases the distance between where I am and the destination I seek.

What is sin? Sin is: destruction

What is sin? Sin is: IDOLOTRY -- that is, worshiping something other than God to fill me in a way that pushes God out of where he belongs (in the King spot of my life) and places me or leisure or sex or vacations or rest or lust or any other thing as an idol in it's place.

What is sin? Sin is: attempting to fill legitimate needs through illegitimate means.

What is sin? Sin is: choosing my innate, sinful desires, telling myself that they are "better", more "right" for me, or more "satisfying" to me than what God, holy and infinite, has set before me. I hate sin. I hate that I choose it over God. I am not worthy of His grace and mercy, but God ROCKS! I am alive only by His infinite worth!

Foundation for Mortification Romans 8:13 “If you through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body you shall live.”

Why do we Kill Sin? 1. Because we MUST.

Why do we Kill Sin? This week (Part 2 of 3 on why…):

Why do we Kill Sin? This week (Part 2 of 3 on why…): 2. Because we CAN!

Doctrine: If you are a Christ follower, sin no longer has authority (mastery) over you!

Sin no longer has mastery over you!

1. Jesus Christ has authority over all

Sin no longer has mastery over you! 1. Jesus Christ has authority over all Matthew 8: When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering.” 7 Jesus said to him, “I will go and heal him.” 8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, “I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.

Sin no longer has mastery over you! 1. Jesus Christ has authority over all Matthew 9:2-8 2 Some men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” 3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!” 4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins....” Then he said to the paralytic, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 And the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men.

Sin no longer has mastery over you! 1. Jesus Christ has authority over all Matthew 28: Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Authority: Exousia: 1) power of choice, liberty of doing as one pleases 2) physical and mental power, especially the ability or strength with which one is endued, which he either possesses or exercises 3) the power of authority (influence) and of right (privilege) 4) the power of rule or government (the power of him whose will and commands must be submitted to by others and obeyed)

Do the powers of darkness really know that?

Do the powers of darkness really know that? YES!!!

Do the powers of darkness really know that? YES!!! Matthew 8:28, When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no-one could pass that way. 29 “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”

Sin no longer has mastery over you! 2. You are “in Christ” if you are a Christ follower

Sin no longer has mastery over you! 2. You are “in Christ” if you are a Christ follower Romans 6:1-4 1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning, so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don ’ t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Sin no longer has mastery over you! 3. You have been bought by Jesus and belong to him

Sin no longer has mastery over you! 3. You have been bought by Jesus and belong to him 1 Corinthians 6: Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Sin no longer has mastery over you! 4. Therefore, you have authority over sin because you are in Jesus

Sin no longer has mastery over you! 4. Therefore, you have authority over sin because you are in Jesus Matthew 10:1 He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

Sin no longer has mastery over you! 4. Therefore, you have authority over sin because you are in Jesus Romans 6: In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14 For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

Power vs Authority: “ If a rhinoceros were to enter this restaurant now, there is no denying he would have great power here. But I would be the first to rise and assure him that he had no authority whatever. ” ~ G. K. Chesterton, describing the difference between power and authority

Power vs Authority:

Sin no longer has mastery over you! 5. Sin is stronger than you and has power, but not authority in your life – this results in constant warfare!

Romans 7: I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. 21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God ’ s law; 23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God ’ s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

The war we are in: “ Do you mortify; do you make it your daily work; be always at it while you live; cease not a day from this work; be killing sin or it will be killing you. ” ~ John Owen – The Mortification of Sin quoted from Overcoming Sin and Temptation, page 50

The war we are in: “ We have a “ body of death ” (Rom. 7:24), from whence we are not delivered but by the death of our bodies (Phil. 3:20). Now, it being our duty to mortify, to be killing of sin while it is in us, we must be at work. He that is appointed to kill an enemy, if he leave [cease] striking before the other ceases living, does but half his work (Gal. 6:9; Heb. 12:1; 2 Cor. 7:1). ” ~ John Owen – The Mortification of Sin quoted from Overcoming Sin and Temptation, page 51

The war we are in: “ Sin does not only still abide in us, but is still acting, still laboring to bring forth the deeds of the flesh. When sin lets us alone we may let sin alone; but as sin is never less quiet than when it seems to be most quiet, and its waters are for the most part deep when they are still, so ought our contrivances against it to be vigorous at all times and in all conditions, even where there is least suspicion. ” ~ John Owen – The Mortification of Sin quoted from Overcoming Sin and Temptation, page 51

You MUST fight! “But if you don’t find yourself dodging the rhino’s horn day and night in a struggle against sin, it may be that you’ve made peace with the rhino. You are willingly, happily under its power and rule…. I appeal to you, for the sake of your soul; Run to Christ! Only he can slay the rhino in your heart.” ~Kris Lundaard, The Enemy Within: Straight Talk about the Power and Defeat of Sin, p. 34.

Application: Will you fight for your right to party? (By KILLING SIN!)
