ISO Standards Update 2001 James David Mason Chairman, ISO/IEC JTC1/SC34 Y-12 National Security Complex (USDOE)

5 March 2001 Knowledge Technologies ISO/IEC JTC1/SC34: Document Description and Processing Languages F Part of JTC1, Information Technology F Working groups for –Information Description (SGML) – Information Presentation (Fonts, DSSSL) –Information Association (HyTime, Topic Maps) F SC34/WG3 met in conjunction with this conference; SC34 will meet again at XML Europe in Berlin

5 March 2001 Knowledge Technologies SC34 started the standardization of markup languages. F Producing a series of standards, beginning with SGML (1986) and continuing through Topic Maps (2000), RELAX (2001),... F Continues to maintain existing standards and look ahead to new projects F Many XML project leaders developed their ideas in SC34 and learned how to do standards work there.

5 March 2001 Knowledge Technologies SC34 technology is at the core of much XML work. F SGML  XML F DSSSL  XSL, XSLT F HyTime  XPath, XPointer, Xlink F SGML information set (GROVE)  XML Infoset and, outside the W3C, F Topic Maps  XTM

5 March 2001 Knowledge Technologies SC34 has work in progress. F SGML adjusted to support XML requirements F Fonts, DSSSL being updated and amended F RELAX in Fast-Track process as ISO TR F Topic Maps may produce several products: –Extensions and amendments –Models and other technical reports –Query language –Data model (to be shared with XTM)

5 March 2001 Knowledge Technologies Latest Status (March 2001) F RELAX is out for ballot, results will be discussed in Berlin F Amendment to DSSSL ready to publish F Project proposals for Topic Map Query Language and Conceptual Model out for initial ballot in JTC1
