Integers on a Number Line

Integers on a Number Line Draw a number line (straight line with arrows at both ends) Put zero in the middle Numbers to the right of zero are positive numbers Numbers to the left of zero are negative numbers (the number right next to 0 is -1, then write to the left by increasing the number)

Integers on a Number Line Numbers to the left of 0 are negative (the numbers themselves increase, but their value decreases) Numbers to the right of 0 are positive (the numbers themselves increase, and their value increases also)

“When am I ever going to use this?” Real life examples Temperature Below and above 0 temperatures Money Making or losing money Real life examples Football Gaining and losing yards Above or below sea level (mountains, water) Diving in water Climbing a mountain Going in a hot air balloon, or on a plane

Word problems Key words to for Below ground level = subtracting Above ground level = adding Goes up = adding Goes down = subtracting Per = multiply Increase = adding Decrease = subtracting Rise = adding Lost = subtracting Gain = adding Loss = subtracting
