Metamorphic Rock

Definition of Metamorphic Rocks Metamorphic rocks are formed when existing rocks are changed into a new rock because of heat, pressure, or chemical change Pressure Heat

Types of Metamorphism

Regional Metamorphism Occurs over a wide area. The heat and pressure are created at convergent boundaries where plates are colliding Usually produces foliated rocks

Contact Metamorphism A rock’s mineral and texture changes when the rock comes into contact with a magma chamber Change caused mainly by heat Creates mainly non-foliated rocks

Contact Metamorphism

Types of Metamorphic Rocks Foliated Rocks metamorphic rocks formed under great pressure where the new minerals are aligned into bands Non-Foliated Rocks metamorphic rocks formed under lower heat and pressure where the minerals are not aligned into bands

Foliated Rock Examples Parent Rock: Shale Daughter Rock: Slate

Foliated Rock Examples Parent Rock: Granite Daughter Rock: Gneiss

Foliated Rock Examples Parent Rock: Sandstone Daughter Rock: Schist

Non-Foliated Rock Examples Parent Rock: Limestone Daughter Rock: Marble

Non-Foliated Rock Examples Parent Rock: Sandstone Daughter: Quartzite
