Presentation transcript:

Masculinity is measured by your success with women achieved by showing immaturity, lack of emotions, and a relaxed physical appearance. Masculinity is not being responsible, sensitive, and well put together because this will result in failed relationships. When in reality the show is using humor to displace negative stereotypes of men.

A sitcom about two brothers who live together. Charlie, the more cool laid back brother is the oldest. Alan is divorced with a son. He is uptight and unsuccessful with the ladies and also at helping his adolescent son with the ladies. His son, Jake, often turns to Charlie for advice with girls. Charlie is constantly having success with the ladies while Alan isn’t. Alan has more feminine qualities and Charlie is “a mans man.” Two and a Half Men Episode: Charlie is a genius Scene: Jake’s break up talk

Charlie Shirt un-tucked or unbuttoned Always in Khakis Mostly wears shorts Always socks showing relaxed hairstyle Alan Shirt tucked in Always wearing a polo or button up Always wears a belt that shows Mostly in pants Always has dress shoes on Hair is cut short

Charlie Hiding his cookies Interrupting advice Making fun of feelings Drinking Alcohol at all hours of the day Avoids his mother and women he has had relations with Doesn’t think about others feelings before he speaks. Alan Takes care of his son Wonders what happened in his past relationships Tries to protect his son’s feelings and ease into the conversation about the break up Constantly corrects Charlie on his own immaturity making him appear to be the big brother when in reality he is the youngest

AlanCharlie “He’s a little Boy Charlie” “little boy my ass” “Give him a break he just got dumped” “Ohhh you’re right…… nope.. My cookies” “Sooner or later every guy gets dumped.”“Some guys get dumped sooner and right Alan?” “She found somebody better” Alan Relates to his sons issue by talking about being dumped himself. His son ask what did you do and he replies, “How do you a mend a broken heart?” Charlie sarcastically says, “How do you stop the rain from falling down. Alan tells Jake, “It will pass son you have to live with the pain.” Charlie replies no he doesn’t and tells Jake to call the hottest girl in school and ask her out. The girl agrees to go out with Jake and Charlie is now a genius

By using humor constantly throughout Two and a Half Men the show is able to make negative stereotypes of men not only seem correct but acceptable. By making the stereotypical manly man constantly successful with women and the more sensitive mature man unsuccessful can put pressure on men to live up to what “a mans man” is. This doesn’t only make a man’s sexual ability seem to be what defines him but a lack there of will cause him be viewed as less of a man.
