American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation The mission of the AKC Canine Health Foundation is to develop significant resources for basic & applied health programs with emphasis on canine genetics to improve the quality of life for dogs & their owners.

The Canine Health Information Center (CHIC)

CHIC – The Canine Health Information Center Jointly sponsored by the AKC CHF and the OFA MISSION: To provide a source of health information for owners, breeders, and scientists, that will assist in breeding healthier dogs Initiated in 2001 as pilot program with 8 participating breeds, today over 130 breed parent clubs participate and over 60,000 dogs have met the individual breed requirements and been assigned CHIC numbers

CHIC CHIC is about encouraging health testing and awareness In short, CHIC… –Establishes a breed specific health screening protocols –Collects health test results from multiple sources –Makes the results available in an online publicly accessible database –Recognizes those dogs that have been tested in accordance with a test protocol recommended by the breed’s Parent Club

CHIC DNA Repository

MISSION –The CHIC DNA Repository, co-sponsored by the OFA and the AKC CHF, collects and stores canine DNA samples along with corresponding Genealogic and Phenotypic information to facilitate future research

CHIC DNA Repository OBJECTIVES –Facilitate more rapid research progress by expediting the sample collection process –Provide researchers with optimized family groups needed for research –Allow breeders to take advantage of future DNA based disease tests as they become available –Foster a team environment between breeders and the research community improving the likelihood of genetic discovery
