James Norman, UK Public Sector CIO, EMC SUSTAINING UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE: MAKING BETTER USE OF INFORMATION ‘Knowledge and data are fundamental to the patient revolution that is so urgently required by our national health service’ Tim Kelsey, Director of Patients and Information at NHS England A report from economic consultancy Volterra Partners and EMC

COMPLEX NHS CHALLENGES The NHS is facing unprecedented financial pressure. The quality of patient treatment is falling as a result … and it is only set to get worse. The Department of Health estimates that 30% of the population costs 70% of the total amount spent on health and social care by NHS England NHS faces a funding gap of £34 billion by 2020 Lack of interoperability between NHS institutions, leaving the system fragmented and crisis driven Use of data analytics is currently limited Current plans to close the funding gap will not work

A NEW PRESCRIPTION IS NEEDED

MAKING THE MOST OF THE OPPORTUNITY

EMC NHS RECOMMENDATIONS Action is needed now Speed up accessibility of data Invest in appropriate skills to handle data effectively Ensure security & compliance of data Change in culture of the DoH – with emphasis on the Wellness Model Collaboration with local AHSNs Create flexible and scalable models for the future

THE WELLNESS AGENDA ICT Resilience and Readiness: – Establish NHS-wide resilience and risk management standards and guidelines, and communicate these widely to commissioning groups and trusts. Delivering the Collaborative Culture – Introduce incentives for better shared services, open standards and sharing best practice for successful collaboration models. Pathway to Data Analytics – Analytics and better use of data is fundamental to the delivery of personalised healthcare and a wellness model. Making better use of information
