Sean Douglas Leadership Fellows Program Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History February 25, 2010

2 sonjahaynesstonectr.unc.edu 2 The Program Through mentorship and study under the supervision of the Director of the Sonja Haynes Stone Center, fellows are charged with working with on-campus student organizations to increase levels of engagement in the programs and initiatives of the Stone Center. The fellowship was created by Dr. Joseph F. Jordan to broaden the college experience to include opportunities to organize and unite their peers for a common purpose, and to instill the propensity to lead and manage pertinent processes as a vital skill set for future endeavors.

3 sonjahaynesstonectr.unc.edu Douglas Bio 3 Major Sean Cedric “Six” Douglas, of Lansing, KS, was born on March 16, 1972 and the son of Diane P. Douglas and Henry L. Douglas. A Charlotte native, Major Douglas attended Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and graduated from Garinger High School in He attended UNC Chapel Hill and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in While attending UNC Chapel Hill, he joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and participated in the Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps), and soon became a Commissioned Officer in the United States Army. He proudly served his country for 13 years, and quickly moved through the ranks and excelled to Major. Major Douglas’ life goal and dream was to fly and serve. He emanated leadership and discipline traits that served him well at Carolina, and on through his career as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot with the U.S. Army where he specialized in Aviation at the time of his passing.

Each student is awarded a seat on our advisory board for the duration of the internship.  Paid opportunities for students to enhance their academic experience with applicable work experience and direct mentoring by the Director of the Center.  A program intended to provide support for those who do not have the financial resources to participate in professional development or work-based programs, and who are members of underrepresented groups in the campus community. 4
