The Sonoran Desert Where in the world is the Sonoran Desert? Who or what lives in the Sonoran Desert? By Melissa Haile Kindergarten Teacher Tell students to look at the landscape and describe the desert environment.

Front side Step #1

The Sonoran Desert is a hot and dry place in the southwestern region of the United States and Mexico. Tell students that the Sonoran desert is located in the southwestern region of U.S. and Mexico. Point out where we live in Arizona and show the students where they are living in the Sonoran Desert. Make sure that the students identify the water and land area on the map.

Back side Step #2

The Sonoran Desert is hot and dry The Sonoran Desert is hot and dry. Many plants and animals live in the Sonoran Desert. I live in the Sonoran Desert. Read this paragraph with the students. Tell students to turn to their partner and tell their partners about what they just read. Give each student a paragraph to cut out and glue on there foldable organizer.

The ________ is hot and dry. Many plants and animals live in the_______. I live in the _________. Read this paragraph with the students. Tell students to turn to their partner and tell their partners about what they just read. Give each student a paragraph to cut out and glue on there foldable organizer.

Completing Backside of Step #2

Sonoran Desert Plants & Animal Movie There are many different kinds of plants and animals in the Sonoran Desert. Explain that life thrives in the Sonoran Desert. Watch the movie. After the movie, give each student the Plants and Animals picture sort. Discuss the different pictures telling if they are a plant or animal and the name of each picture. Students can cut out pictures, sort them, and tell how they sorted. Sonoran Desert Plants & Animal Movie

Middle Step #3 For actual guided writing practice, the names of each animal and plant should be removed from the student document. The teacher should work with students to sound out and write words correctly for each plant and animal. But for time purposes of the AZGeo lesson, the names of all plants and animals are printed on the student form and focus is placed solely on the sorting of objects into specific categories.

The ________ lives in the Sonoran Desert. The jackrabbit lives in the Sonoran Desert. The Saguaro lives in the Sonoran Desert. Explain that the desert plants and animals are all living things that have adapted to their environment (click on each picture to watch video/songs on what plants and animals need to survive). Discuss that plants and animals have ways of surviving the lack of water and hot summer days. Refer to the pictures students have sorted and use the plant and animal pictures to create new simple sentences. Give each student the Sonoran Desert sentence frames and have them write their own sentences. Tell students to read their sentences to a partner. jackrabbit Saguaro The ________ lives in the Sonoran Desert.

Completing the Middle During this activity, the teacher should model one sentence showing how to choose from the “doors” of the folded organizer. The next step should be the teacher and students reading and deciding together. Last, the teacher should allow the students to try two sentences on their own and monitor the students ability to complete the sentences correctly.

Draw a mural of the Sonoran Desert on the front page. Students will create a mural of the Sonoran Desert. They will choose the correct plants and animals for their picture.
