Levers are Simple  Levers are simple machines that have a rigid arm around a fixed point or fulcrum. Force is transferred from one part of the arm to another. The input (effort) force is multiplied or redirected into an output (resistance) force. Levers are divided into three different classes.  By Pam Walker| Elaine Wood John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Updated on Dec 13, 2010John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Levers in Action

Why edTPA at ECU?  NC Department of Public Instruction mandated Program Revisioning  UNC General Administration's Teacher Quality Research with Carolina Institute of Public Policy – Value Added Modeling (HLM3)  ECU’s drill down study into VAM modeling

INPUTS AND OUTPUTS

edTPA Inputs  Efforts: – Build communication infrastructure – Support candidates – Lead local evaluator training – Involve P-12 partners – Develop & strengthen formative signature assessments – Share edTPA data

edTPA Outputs  Resistance: – Faculty buy-in – Philosophical differences – Increased workload – Candidate stress – Technology – Time & Calendars “The edTPA portfolio process was a bit stressful. I do feel however, it really helped me understand how much one should examine every aspect of planning, execution and assessment with every lesson.” 2013 Middle Grades Education Graduate

EDTPA AS A LEVER  Lever for Learning  Lever for Improvement  Lever for Change

Lever for Learning  Signature Assessments and Program Identity  Engaging P-12 partners  Bridge to Practice “The lessons involved with my edTPA were engaging, fun, and interactive for the students. I incorporated technology and several ISLES strategies. Despite the stress and intensity of the edTPA, I was satisfied and pleased with my students' progress and response.” 2013 Elementary Education Graduate

Lever for Improvement  Educative Data  Professional Communities of Practice  Level the Playing Field

Lever for Change “The edTPA was a huge challenge in the beginning, but looking back at how it helped me learn to evaluate my teaching and reflect on my experiences has been a huge help in learning to become an effective educator.” 2013 Elementary Education Graduate “The edTPA provided great insight on my ability to plan, implement and assess young children. It help me realize some areas where I needed to give more and improve in my teaching. The edTPA showed me where my strengths are, and most of all it showed me that I love what I do.” 2013 Birth- Kindergarten Education Graduate
