History of Sinn Fein The oldest political party in Ireland Founded in 1905 by Arthur Griffith in support of the unification of the Irish Republic Was a powerful political force during the early 20th Century Helped found the Irish Parliament in 1919 while Sinn Fein controlled 73 of 105 Irish seats in the British Parliament. Supported the IRA during the Irish War for Independence Those who supported post-war treaty split from those who were anti- treaty Sinn Fein lost support to the anti-treaty Fianna Fail until 1970 In 1960s Sinn Fein turned into a leftist group that supported provisions of housing and social security Supported IRA policy throughout the 1970's and 1980's Is currently a left wing party with representation in both the British House of Commons and the Northern Ireland Assembly
