Resizing Images CS 268
Where to start? Pictures (of course) Need to down size them for the web. Pictures taken with a 10 mega pixel camera are usually between 4 and 8 MB in size – too large for most web applications (take too long to download) And you need even smaller "thumb nails" Need a program to make this easy! In the labs Fireworks make this easy. If you don't have Fireworks on your personal computer: from a web search I found this free one (there are others) – Easy Thumbnails
In P115 – Use Fireworks
Fireworks resizing Select folder and add the desired photos (I added all of them) You can select from more than one folder!
Fireworks resizing Select Next and Add Export and Scale to the right Include in batch: window Select Export on the right side then open Settings and select JPEG – experiment with the Smaller File and Better Quality settings to see how large the generated images are
Fireworks resizing Select Scale and add to the right side then open the Scale drop down box and make appropriate selections. In this screen shot I'm making the resized – but still large images – to display when a thumbnail is clicked. Notice that I allow the height to vary to avoid distorting the images. For thumbnails select 70 x 70px
Fireworks resizing Click the Browse button and select the folder to save the resized images. Finally click the Batch button and let it happen!
Using Easy Thumbnails You can download and install on your personal computer (also in the labs – if you install to the desktop or to your H: drive)
Easy Thumbnails Select the resized image width and height If you leave one empty the width or height will be set and the other dimension will be appropriately scaled
Easy Thumbnails And finally, select the folder to look in and the folder to save the resized images in This program works well for creating thumbnails – and also works well to resize the larger images displayed when the thumbnail is clicked
