Monroe Doctrine "the American continents, by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintain, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers."

Main Idea The Monroe doctrine made it clear to European states to limit their expansion in the Western Hemisphere.

Point of View/Bias Monroe wanted the United States to be isolated from the rest of the world’s affairs.

Inferences/Outside Information James Monroe was the 5 th President of the United States. The Roosevelt Corollary (1905) expanded the Monroe Doctrine stating that not only were the nations of the Western Hemisphere not open to colonization by European nations, but that the United States had the responsibility to protect the Western Hemisphere.
