Presidential Text Boxes On a five-hundred acre plantation in Westmoreland Country, Virginia, on April 28, 1858, James Monroe, who was part Scottish and would be the second oldest out of five children, was born to his mother and father, Elisabeth Jones and Spence Monroe. After recovering from the injury in the war, James Monroe became an aid for on of Washington’s commanders, William Alexander lord Stirling. In 1782 Monroe began his political career in Virginia and studied law with Thomas Jefferson. Once Monroe reached the age 24 he was elected to the Virginia Assembly where he voted against the ratification because he thought the Constitution gave to much power to the Federalist over the states. As a young child, James Monroe attended Campbelltown Academy. In 1774, at the age sixteen Monroe joined William and Mary College, a few months later his parents died. His uncle, Judge Joseph Jones became his Guardian. Monroe dropped out of college to fight in the Revolutionary War, during the war Monroe was severely injured by a musket ball to the neck. James Monroe was serving with the Continental Congress in New York when he met Elisabeth Kortright. They honeymooned in Long Island then moved to Virginia so that Monroe could study law. The couple had two daughters, Eliza, Maria, and one son, James Spence, who unfortunately died as a young child. Presidential Text Boxes In 1799 Monroe became Governor of Virginia. He served as governor for three terms, but his main career was working with political parties. Soon he became James Madison’s sectary, during this time Monroe tried to convince the French that Jay’s treaty was no threat. James Monroe became president March 4, 1817, he was 58 years old. Monroe traveled the United States to gain trust, this adventure was called the “ The Era of Good Feeling”. His vise president was Daniel D. Tompkins. His cabinet was one of the best in U.S. history. James Madison was the president before James Monroe. He was called the “ Farther of Constitution” because he had a big roll in writing the Constitution and he was the author of the U.S. Bill of Rights. During Madison’s two terms presidency, Monroe suggested adding more protection for the White House, but the advice wasn’t taken. Presidential Text Boxes Daniel D. Tompkins was Monroe’s vice president. During his vise presidency he ran for governor of New York. The election was held in 1820 and Tompkins didn’t win. He had financial problems because he took out to many loans and that effected his ability to pay for his medical expenses. At the end of James Monroe’s term he moved back to Oak Hill, Virginia to be with his wife in hopes of improving her health. In 1830 his wife died from health issues. In 1825, at the age 58, John Quincy Adams was elected president, his secretary was Henry Clay. During his presidency he built a canal to help the growth of the country. Before death James Monroe moved in with his daughter, Maria Hester. On July 4, 1831 he died of heart failure, at the age 73. Monroe was buried in New York, then in Virginia.
