Social Studies 11 WWII BEGINS

 Yes, your tests are marked…. but I cannot hand them back yet because there is still one student who hasn’t written it. You can check you mark on CMM  Today – first block - we will discuss whether or not WW2 could have been prevented, we will look at Canada’s early contribution for WW2  block two – we will look at the major battles of WW2 and their significance to Canada.  September 1, 1939 – Germany invaded Poland and WWII began  Used blitzkrieg tactics to quickly subdue Poland  Luftwaffe (German air force) airplanes attacked key targets  Wehrmacht attacked next using panzers (tanks) & motorized infantry (foot soldiers) WWII BEGINS

 September 3, 1939 – Britain & France declared war on Germany & Germany’s allies  Canadian politicians held a special session of parliament to decide whether or not to enter the war  Government decided to enter the war but only if the Canadian government agreed conscription would not occur  September 10, 1939 – Canada declared war on Germany & Germany’s allies

 The Phony War  Britain & France thought Hitler would attack western Europe after Poland so they stationed troops on the French- German border  But, nothing happened in the west b/tw Sept 1939 & April 1940  This period was called the Phony War THE WAR IN WESTERN EUROPE
