Lecture # 9 Garment Sizing system

What is Size?  The accurate measurement of a body part to design something accurately OR  Numbered classes into which things are divided

Body Types  Three type of bodies exist in the world –Ectomorph  Small trunk and long arms and legs –Endomorph  Rounded face, short neck & muscular body –Mesomorph  Long trunk & strong body

EctomorphMesoomorphEndomorph

Changing Measurements…  Individual Variability  Gender Variability  Race Variability  Generation Variability  Changing Lifestyle

Individual Variability…  Individual variation is a function of time  Age causes the body change in both shape and height  Most prominent changes are waist, hips and thighs  After reaching the age of 50, people start losing weight.  The Swedish Institute of Textile Research (TEFO) has made a sizing system

Gender Variability…  There are more changes in female structure as compared to the male structure  Depends on the racial and ethnic background  National Aeronautics and space administration (NASA)

Race Variability  There are six ethnic groups –West –Africa –Middle East –Far East Asia –Latin America –South Asia

Generation Variability…  Changes take place due to –Diets –Activities –Increased Immigration

Basic / Standard Sizes Sr. # Size Name ChestWaistHips

Basic / Standard Sizes  Usually 42, 44 and 46 sizes are considered as small (S)  48 and 50 sizes are considered as medium (M)  52 and 54 sizes are considered as large (L)

What is a group?  “Number of people or things classed together are called a group”

Groups…  We have to consider two parameters when making groups…  Length (Height) of the people  Width of the people

Lets start from size 50…(Width wise) Group s ABCDEF SizeChestWaistHips

Groups…  Group “A” belongs to “Extra slim” category  Group “B” belongs to “Slim” category  Group “C” belongs to “Normal” category  Group “D” belongs to “Fat” category  Group “E” belongs to “Medium Fat” category  Group “F” belongs to “Extra Fat” category

Length wise size chart… Sr. # SizeChestHeight ShortMediumTall Extra Tall

8-Head Theory…  According to this theory, a person’s total height is divided into eight parts.  Each part is equal to the length of that specific person’s head

8-Head Theory…  1 st Head –Neck  2 nd Head –Armpit  Armpit = 2 heads - 2 cm  3 rd Head –Trouser length / Waist Line / Jacket length  Trouser length = 5 heads + 4cm  Waist Line = 3 head  Jacket length = 2.5 heads

8-Head Theory…  4 th Head –Hip Line / Inseam length of trouser  Inseam length of trouser = 4 heads cm  5 th Head –Thigh Line  6 th Head –Knee Line

8-Head Theory…  7 th Head –Calf Line  8 th Head –Ground Line
