Entrepreneurship Development to Address poverty issue Smt. Mdubala, 38 year old was a resident of tsunami affected panchayat(Alappad) in Kerala, South India. Her husband was severely injured in tsunami and is bedridden. The couple had two daughters. She could not find a way to generate income, at least for meeting the daily expenses. She also could not go out in search of any labour because her presence was needed to nurse her bedridden husband. She did not have any idea to overcome such a situation. Sahayi team members advised her to attend a training programme on Entrepreneurship development in the nearby place. I had coordinated and facilitated the training sessions. Somehow she managed to attend the training. As a result of the motivation, knowledge and interest she gained from the training she approached me to find out a solution for her poverty and related issues. We sit together 3-4 times to analyse her situation and assess the market potentials. These interactions helped her to identify a viable micro enterprise- vegetable vending- to earn a regular income without going away from her house. In addition to the training, our organization (Sahayi) gave her a moderate grant for initiating the income generation venture and extended follow up consultancy support for a period of one year. This not only helped her earn a modest monthly income but also helped nurse her husband in bed without any interruption. Now she is able to manage the daily routine needs of her family. As she opined. “This timely support reduced my mental tension and stress caused by tsunami and associated unemployment and improved my confidence, hopes and aspiration and developed a positive attitude towards life. “
