How it works The BGA

The BGA remit Established in 1929 by gliding clubs Provides national leadership of gliding Represents the interests of glider pilots International representation of UK gliding Regulation of gliding in the UK Small full-time team, large virtual team Full time - 6 staff Part-time - 3 staff and 10 contractors A volunteer army!

Executive Committee 12 volunteer elected members Responsible for directing and managing the affairs of the BGA The powers are set out in the Articles of Association - written include the powers to delegate Certain actions can only be sanctioned by the member clubs at the Annual General Meeting e.g. -the annual budget (subscriptions) - changes to Operational Regulations

BGA Sub-Committees BGA subcommittees are established by the Executive Committee and are responsible for policy formation and execution The current sub committees are: 1 Marketing 2 Safety 3 Instructors 4 Technical 5 Airspace 6 Competition and Awards 7 Development 8 Staff Administration 9 Financial Advisory

Direct Support to Clubs Advice and information from BGA’s professional staff or expert volunteers Occasional visits by Regional Examiners, Regional Safety Officers, Regional Technical Officers, Development Officers, Executive Committee members Courses and seminars for tug pilots, safety officers, child protection officers, junior pilots, marketing and PR officers Resources to download from website Conferences Among other things!

Development Help clubs to develop and improve their operations Protect clubs and sites from external threats Assist clubs with business management and funding Ensure Local Plans make provision for gliding Assist clubs threatened by planning restrictions Organise annual Club Chairmen’s Conference Share good practice & networking between clubs Funding through the Philip Wills Trust and the Planning and Environment Fund.
