Ephesians 6:4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.

“Training” Gr. Paideia “1. the whole training and education of children (which relates to the cultivation of mind and morals, and employs for this purpose now commands and admonitions, now reproof and punishment). It also includes the training and care of the body. 2. whatever in adults also cultivates the soul, esp. by correcting mistakes and curbing passions.” (Thayer).

Bible Discipline I. Discipline is Commanded. A.Do not provoke to wrath, but bring up in discipline of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). B.Those who do not discipline hate their children (Proverbs 13:24; 1:1-7). C.Destruction of the flesh can lead to Salvation of the soul. (I Corinthians 5:1-5; 2 Corinthians 2:6).

Bible Discipline II. Discipline is Beneficial. A.It yields the “peaceable fruit of righteousness” (Heb. 12:5-11). B.It yields respect (Heb. 12:9). C.It brings wisdom (Prov. 29:15). D.It brings rest and peace. (Proverbs 29:17).

Bible Discipline III. Discipline is Unpleasant. A.It is grievous for the time. (Hebrew 12:11). 1.Doesn’t mean spare unpleasant punishment. (Ephesians 6:4). 2.It must not lead to discouragement. (Col. 3:21).

Discouragement Comes… When discipline… Is unreasonable Is unmeasured Has no clear objective Fails to acknowledge improvement.

Bible Discipline III. Discipline is Unpleasant. A.It is grievous for the time. (Hebrew 12:11). 1.Doesn’t mean spare unpleasant punishment. (Ephesians 6:4). 2.It must not lead to discouragement. (Col. 3:21). B.There is value to godly sorrow. (II Corinthians 7:8-11).

Bible Discipline IV. Discipline Can Lead to Salvation. A.Discipline your child while there is hope. (Proverbs 19:18). B.Discipline can deliver one from punishment in the next life. (Proverbs 23:13,14). C.Destruction of flesh but salvation of spirit. (I Corinthians 5:5). D.When he is old he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6).
