Time for Homework! Helpful Hints for Families

….after all, we already went to elementary school.

Setting the Scene

SPACE: Provide a quiet, well-lit place to complete homework. Make sure all materials are available and avoid having the radio or television on to minimize distractions. Keep interruptions by siblings and friends to a minimum as well.

SCHEDULE: Make studying and reading, not homework alone, a daily habit. Don’t ask your child if he/she has homework each night – assume that he/she always has homework or studying to do. Establish a set time for homework and/or studying.

ATTITUDE: Show your child you think homework is important. The attitude you express about school and homework will be the attitude your child acquires. Set clear expectations. If children don’t see the value of homework, avoid lectures. Instead, ask questions such as, “Why do you think the teacher wants you to do homework? How does homework help you? What will happen if you don’t do it?” Offer one brief value statement like, “School is your job and teachers are your boss. You need to follow the schools rules, even if you don’t agree with or like them.”

SUPPORT: Check homework and be available for assistance. When your child asks for help, provide guidance, NOT answers.

Involvement: Take an active interest in your child’s schooling. Be in contact with your child’s teacher

Your child for good EFFORT and good PERFORMANCE. It will build their self-esteem.
