Introduction CertifiedSafety has been honored two of the past three years as Category Winner in Specialty Contractors-Technical Support Presenters are  Joe Sgarlata-VP of Gulf Coast Operations  Bennett Ghormley-Exec. VP of Safety

Topic - ”Embracing and Managing Change” We have grown significantly from 2004 to 2005 We embraced and prepared for change by building our corporate infrastructure: Management Supervision Programs Career Development

Topics for Discussion Work Descriptions Permit Verification Process Performing Task Specific Surveys

Work Descriptions Safety coordination plan defines each job classification Confined Space Specialists: Bp asked for a solution / CS delivered Specialists enter confined spaces Perform Confined Space surveys Monitor for compliance Make corrective actions on at risk observations Issue on the spot awards/incentives

Work Descriptions (cont) Work descriptions include job site classifications: Project Managers, Supervisors and Leads Permit and Confined Space Specialists Safety Attendants Ground Support Bp played a role to new classifications Work descriptions: Give clear understanding of expectations for the employee Accountability in their job performance Good results that equals client satisfaction

Permit Verification Process We assure that tasks must have a job specific checklist completed before the work begins Communication specific to the hazards on the checklist The checklist is broken up into 7 sections

Permit Verification Process 1. General Information- Permit description, date, time, equipment #, type of permit, emergency alarms, evacuation assembly areas etc 2. (PPE) Requirements 3. Permit Requirements- Continuous monitoring, sewers & drains covered, spark containment etc

Permit Verification Process (cont) 4. Scaffold User Inspection 5. Fall Protection Requirements 6. Additional Hazards 7. Signatures- Each crew member, the crew leader and the supervisor Conclusion : 8. Allows the entire crew to discuss the hazards of the task 9. Ensures permit requirements have been evaluated, satisfied, and understood

Performing Task Specific Surveys Types of surveys conducted: Authorization-to-work (ATW) Hot Work Permits Safety Specific Confined Space Entry

Performing Task Specific Surveys (cont) Each survey monitors the compliance of that particular task procedure Make corrective actions Document survey findings Findings as a learning lesson for everyone

Performing Task Specific Surveys (cont) Task specific surveys are completed by: Safety Coordinators Confined Space Auditors Permit Specialists Supervisors Craftsman Bp volunteers from all departments

How the process worked Our safety specialists developed an auditing program to evaluate each work process and task assignment Daily/shift safety reporting to the project and owner On-the-spot/hourly/daily/shift feedback with coaching and corrective measures

What This Means Even though we grew in a short time, preparing for change allowed us to keep our processes in check Our management infrastructure grew in proportion to the size of our field growth As projects were added, we recruited, trained, and managed the process

What’s Ahead CertifiedSafety will continue to grow Through lessons learned and owner/general contractor feedback, we will meet requirements and expectations of those we serve

Thank you to: The HBR Safety and Health Resource Committee The Audit Teams BP for hosting the audit team and evaluation process Our employees for helping us achieve safety excellence Questions & Answers
