August 12, 2011 OSEP CIV – Results (cont.) 26 National relevance –Students with disabilities in New York City are four times more likely to be suspended than their nondisabled peers (1/31/11) –Almost 60 percent of Texas public school students received punishments ranging from expulsion to in-school suspensions of a single period at least once between seventh and 12th grade (7/19/11) –Attorney General Eric Holder and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the creation of the Supportive School Discipline Initiative which aims to support good discipline practices to foster safe and productive learning environments in every classroom (7/21/11)
