preposition- A preposition is a word that tells the location or direction. Location (on, under, in, between ) Direction (from, toward, to, about, across ) Example: The mouse is on the table. The ball rolled across the playground. I swung at the ball. Preposition

Prepositional Phrases A prepositional phrase is a group of words that begin with a preposition. in the water to the mountains by his side Over the years After the party finished

Where are prepositional phrases found? Prepositional phrases can be found at the beginning, the middle, or at the end of a sentence. After the party finished we went home. Mike went to the mountains yesterday afternoon. The children swam in the water.

What do prepositional phrases do? They expand sentences by adding details and examples. They answer questions such as where, what kind, which one, when, and how. Northeastern Native Americans lived. Where did they live? Northeastern Native Americans lived in the woodland areas. The Iroquois raised crops. What kind of crops were they? The Iroquois raised crops of corn and other vegetables.

The corn is delicious. Which corn? The corn from the field is delicious. They held festivals. When did they hold festivals? Throughout the year they held festivals. The people worked. How did they work? The people worked in groups.

The Importance of identifying and using prepositional phrases. Makes you a better writer by adding more detail to your sentences.
