June 14, Show Me the (DMH) Data How the Missouri Department of Mental Health is moving toward true Data Warehousing

June 14, Step 1 – Baseline 1994 situation Most DMH data on mainframe Used DB2 for “new” system. Older systems IMS or flat file processing systems Reporting only by IT staff using AS-IST Lots of “greenbar” Each report costs MF cycles

June 14, Step 2 – DMH Data Repository Began in 1994 with failed attempt to move new production Client Tracking System from MF/DB2 to AIX/Oracle. Gave report writers access to copy of production Over next 4 years added copies of transactional data from most core systems; later SAM II Added common identifiers to link between systems Now have 900 GB in 2629 tables, 900+ users Very successful compared to reporting against Tx systems on different platforms and databases

June 14, Step 3 – New Data Warehouse CIMOR = Customer Information Management, Outcomes and Reporting DW Goals One source of the truth All enterprise data Metadata with common definitions of terms Modeled for ease of use and performance Include cubes for analysis and mining Appropriate toolsets Affordable infrastructure and operation

June 14, DMH DW (Core) Architecture

June 14, Challenges Building DW as part of development project Changes in database Lack of realistic data Lack of informed customer input Prioritization Need “some of everything” to start Prioritizing dimensional marts Inexperience with DW technologies Time and money (what’s new?)

June 14, Show Me the (Children’s) Data How the State of Missouri is moving toward an interagency Children’s Services Data Warehouse.

June 14, CCSDW Goal of Children’s Initiative is to improve services to Missouri children across state agencies Comprehensive Children’s Services DW is the major tool to enable analysis Current CCSDW project involves DSS and DMH with ITSD playing lead role State Project Manager assigned Tier Technologies contracted Now completing Detailed Requirements

June 14, CCSDW Challenges Many source systems Availability of business and technical experts in agencies Complexity of children’s systems Technology decisions Controlling scope Core entities Systems History Other agencies

June 14, Show Me Good News Strong business backing Vision of success Enough funding to make progress Commitment of ITSD staff Belief that DW projects can be among the biggest successes for IT and Business
