Woody Guthrie Woody Guthrie was born on July 14, 1912, in Okemah, Oklahoma. He was the third child of Charles and Nora Guthrie’s five children. His eager reading and interest in music helped him throughout his life. Woody was orphaned at age fourteen and developed a nomadic way of life. He earned his first guitar in Texas and began to write some of his own songs. Guthrie wrote around one thousand songs during his lifetime which earned him his place in musical history.
