The Digital Content Explosion Remember when news and information was primarily consumed via printed media? In the last 15 years, that world has changed Explosion of Internet use and content creation:  1 billion Internet users worldwide (up from 48 million in 1996)  161 exabytes (billion gigabytes) of digital content created and copied in 2006  Equal to 3 million times all the books ever written  Every minute, scientific knowledge increases by 2,000 pages  It takes 5 years to read the new scientific material produced every 24 hours

User-Generated Content Takes Us to a New Level By 2011, 1.8 gigabytes of digital content will be created annually 65,000 Videos are added to YouTube Every day 500,000 new users access the Internet every day 120,000 new blogs are created each day

The Good, The Bad and Why We’re Here ►This proliferation of online content creates a great opportunity: a new global marketplace for the consumption of licensed content ►It also creates a great threat: the unauthorized global distribution of unlicensed content

Traditional U.S. Copyright Law ►Protects the authors of “original works of authorship” fixed in a tangible form of expression ►Covers published and unpublished works ►Grants exclusive rights to copyright owner ►Ordinarily protects works created on or after January 1, 1978 until 70 years after the author’s death

Copyright Holders’ Exclusive Rights ►Reproduce materials (scan copies of an article) ►Distribute copies ( those articles) ►Create derivative work (translate article into another language) ►Publicly perform (show a documentary video at a company meeting) ►Publicly display (post article for viewing on the Internet)

Unfortunately, Users Don’t See it That Way … ►“I consider anything published on a Web page to be somewhat open for use.” ►“If I don’t see a copyright © in a circle, I wouldn’t even think about the issue.” ►“Generally…if I purchase information online, I feel free to incorporate that research into my work and share it…” © Outsell, Inc & Copyright Clearance Center. Digital Copyright Considerations ►All original artistic or intellectual creations granted copyright protection against unauthorized use, regardless of physical expression ►Avoid potential pitfalls of digital copyright infringement by obtaining permissions to copyrighted works ►Applies to both production on new platform (Web site) and conversion to other distribution media (QuickTime) ►Permissions granted with license or copyright clearance from copyright owners
