International Institute of Business Analysis To develop and maintain standards for the practice of business analysis and for the certification of its practitioners The IIBA is an international non-profit professional association for business analysis professionals. Vision “The world's leading association for Business Analysis professionals ” Mission KBa

IIBA Goals  Create and develop awareness and recognition of the value and contribution of the role of the Business Analysis Professional  Define the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge  Publicly recognize qualified practitioners through an internationally acknowledged certification program  Provide a forum for knowledge sharing KBa

Research Background  From January 2006 until September 2006, the IIBA posted a salary survey on its web site  Responses were not limited to IIBA members  Over 1500 individuals participated  Results are presented in $USD NB: These results have not been audited for statistical accuracy – but we didn’t think you would care…

USA Salary Averages  Out of 945 responses from the USA  ~10% make over $100k  ~33% make over $90k  Things to think about before relocating  Highest Salary – CT - $165k  Lowest Salary – TX - $29k  Highest Average – NJ - $93k  Lowest Average – ND - $36

USA Salary Averages  41 regions  39 states  Washington, DC  Puerto Rico  24 have average salaries > $70k

Canadian Salary Averages  Out of 371 responses from Canada  ~5% make over $100k  ~7% make over $90k  Things to think about before relocating  Highest Salary – AB (Calgary) - $200k – but ON (Toronto) is in second place at $150k  Lowest Salary – ON (Toronto) - $20.5k - but it turns out you can be paid poorly anywhere in Canada  Lowest Average – NB - $50

Canada Salary Averages  While Canada doesn’t offer the extremes in compensation that the US does, it is still provides a reasonable living…  And you don’t have to move to Toronto!  Salary ranges across the major cities do not vary as radically as in the US

Findings – Compensation  Incentive - % of Salary  USA – 3.8%  Canada – 3.9%  ROW – 4.6%  Benefits  USA – upper middle quartile  Canada – lower middle quartile  ROW - lower middle quartile

Demand for Business Analysis Professional Online Job Market Source: Info-Tech Research, April 17, 2006

A Few Other Findings  The marketplace is still confused about the role of the Business Analysis Professional  Postings include IIBA BA plus financial BA  Tend to look for Subject Matter Experts or project management knowledge  Don’t need any other project team member because the BA can do it all – project manage, develop, test, design  On the other hand, industry salary surveys or job postings segment the role into systems analyst, business systems analyst, etc.  Companies still uncertain about the value of the BA resource – they are uncertain what the market rate is for qualified BAs

Business Analysis Body of Knowledge Knowledge Areas Enterprise Analysis Requirements Planning & Management Requirements Elicitation Requirements Analysis Requirements Communications Solution Assessment & Validation Fundamentals Most job postings focus on 5/6 KN plus other stuff – testing, PM, SME, development EA – a lot of folks do it but most organizations don’t hire for it

Conclusions  Remember – you are not in it for the money…  But if you were – and you were considering moving to the US – or lived there already  Working in the Mid-Atlantic (NJ, DC, MD, CT) seems to be the best options Or if you don’t like the East coast  OK, IL, OR or CA are other options  But if Canada is your home – or have decided to locate based on your experiences at this conference  You can locate almost anywhere and be similarly compensated Calgary offers the best salaries but you may have to live in a stable Or the Yukon, if you like the Great Outdoors!

Conclusions  There are lots of options for someone who likes to travel  Over 77% of the US respondents made over $70k  But only 28% of Canadian BAs make more than $70k (remember: quality of life…) And don’t forget…  Demand for the role continues to grow and as the role becomes further defined, the compensation will improve
