What other problems did the Weimar Government face? L.O. To investigate external problems faced by the Weimar Government By the end of this lesson... ALL OF US will be able to categorise the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. EVEN BETTER IF you can explain how the German people may have reacted to the Treaty. EXCELLENT IF you can give developed explanations of the impact this treaty would have on the Weimar Republic.

Once the Weimar Government took charge of Germany, one of the first things it had to do was sign the peace treaty, the Treaty of Versailles.

You have now been given a copy of some of the terms that Germany had to agree to. You have fifteen minutes to sort them into three catagories: Territorial terms Military Terms Financial Terms All colonies to be given to the Allied Powers No tanks, armoured cars and heavy military permitted. Coal to be mined in the Saar by France No military aircraft permitted Germany to build merchant ships to replace Allied ships sunk by U-boats. Saarland area of Germany to be run by the League of Nations Cattle and sheep to be given to Belgium and France as reparations. Resource rich region of Alsace-Lorrain returned to France. No union (Anschluss) with Austria Danzig turned into a Free City. (no longer controlled by Germany) No submarines allowed. Germany to pay reparations fixed at £6600 million to Allied Powers. Posen and West Prussia given to Poland. Rhineland (area on boarder with France) demilitarised. Army not to exceed 100,000 No naval vessel to be greater than 10,000 tons.

Explain how the ToV will cause problems for the Weimar Republic.

How do you think Germany would react to the terms of the Treaty of Versailles?

Source A, a cartoon from a German paper, entitled ‘Clemenceau the vampire’, published in July Clemenceau, the leader of France England and America ? Can you explain what this cartoon suggests about how the German people reacted to the Treaty of Versailles? 4 minutes

Why do you think Germany was angry at the Treaty of Versailles? Organise the factors into a “Diamond nine” Most significant Least significant Germany was forced to have a weak army. Germany had to take the blame for starting the war. Germany lost lots of land. Germany was not allowed to untie with Austria. Germany had to pay to rebuild in war torn France and Belgium. May profitable regions taken from Germany. Payment of reparations meant there was little money to get people back to work in Germany. Germany was not allowed to negotiate the terms of the Treaty. ANY OTHER REASON YOU CAN THINK OF Germany was forced to have a weak army. Germany had to take the blame for starting the war. Germany lost lots of land. Germany was not allowed to untie with Austria. Germany was not allowed to negotiate the terms of the Treaty. ANY OTHER REASON YOU CAN THINK OF

Which one of these statements is the most accurate AND WHY? 1)Germany was only angry at the Treaty of Versailles because they were forced to accept responsibility for starting the war and their military forces were reduced. 2)Germany was only angry at the Treaty of Versailles because they were forced to accept responsibility for starting the war and they loss territory. 3)Germany was only angry at the Treaty of Versailles because they were forced to accept responsibility for starting the war, their military forces were reduced and they lost territory. 4)Germany thought the terms of the Treaty of Versailles were very acceptable. Why was Germany unhappy with the terms of the Treaty of Versailles?

Completely understand the Treaty of Versailles Still have a few questions about the Treaty of Versailles Still have lots of questions about the Treaty of Versailles Don’t understand the Treaty of Versailles at all WHICH STATEMENT SUMS UP HOW YOU FEEL?

How do you think that the Treaty affected the German government? The German army believed that by signing the Treaty of Versailles the government had ‘stabbed Germany in the back’. They argued that if they had carried on fighting the war that Germany would have been victorious and preserved Germany’s honour. Many people felt that the new government had betrayed Germany by signing the treaty.
