Overview to Health, Safety and Wellbeing at Griffith Welcome to Griffith University!

 Griffith University has a responsibility to ensure a healthy and safe learning environment for all students.  Griffith University has a Student Personal Accident Insurance Policy which covers enrolled Griffith University students. The benefits are available when any incident happens to a student whilst they are actually engaged in activities officially organised (i.e. your practicum) and under the control of the University.  Information on health and safety management plans, policies and to report an incident/hazard see the Griffith Safe and Well website: At Griffith we take seriously H&S responsibilities:

 comply with university health and safety policies and procedures  conduct activities in a manner which prevents personal injury or injury to others, and damage to property  cooperate with and actively participate in the University’s safety management system  report any incidents, unsafe conditions or acts that come to their attention Your H&S Responsibilities:

If you notice a hazard Hazards should be reported immediately to prevent incident and injury. Call Security or the Campus Life maintenance hotline service or notify a staff member. If you become ill or injured on campus  Seek assistance from a staff member or call Security.  Ensure your illness or injury is adequately treated. Nathan and Gold Coast Campus have a Health Service.  Report your injury or illness. This can be done with the assistance of a staff member (first aid officer or school secretary) using the GSafe incident reporting.  Refer to Student Assistance following incident/injury for information about support available If you are injured on a placement, field trip  Follow incident / injury reporting procedures within the particular workplace.  Ensure the incident/ injury has been reported, as soon as practicable, to a staff member (your placement coordinator or GU placement supervisor).  Refer to Student Assistance following incident/injury for information about support available What to do when…

If you find someone who is ill or injured Ensure it is safe for you to assist the ill or injured person before providing assistance if required. Seek assistance from staff or Security or you can contact Health Services. Provide required information for reporting and investigation purposes. If there is an emergency If you are the first person at the scene of an emergency, ensure your own safety and contact Security immediately. In the event of an evacuation you should remain calm and follow the directions of staff members. Assemble at the assembly point nearest to the evacuation site and await further instructions from fire wardens. If you feel intimidated or in danger Contact Security to report immediate threats. Counseling Services and Harassment Contact Officers available at each campus can also provide support and assistance. What to do when…

 For science laboratories, please observe the laboratory procedures appropriate to the area under the direction of laboratory technical staff.  In Lectures should you have any specific health requirements you should report this to your course convenor or lecturer.  See the red/orange light in the middle of the lecture theatre. If the orange light illuminates, you can stay seated but if the red light activates you need to calmly move to the assembly point.  Teaching spaces are not to be overcrowded. Your lecturer will ask that you do not sit in aisles or place bags or personal belongings in passageways. Should safe access be compromised, then alternate teaching arrangements will be made.  Speed Limits on all campuses must be observed for the safety of people and wildlife. Roads through campuses are listed as public roads, therefore Police may patrol and impose fines and demerit points.  Basic and appropriate hygiene practice should be observed on campus (hand washing before handling and eating food, leaving toilets and washrooms clean and tidy, not sharing drink bottles etc.).  If you drink alcohol you should observe responsible drinking practice (safe limits, prevention of drink spiking by not leaving drinks unattended etc.). To further ensure your health and safety

Children on Campus Policy: 1.Parents may bring their children on campus in situations where there are sudden and unexpected difficulties in childcare arrangements, the children must be supervised by the parent at all times. 2.However, if the child is unwell, infectious or has a communicable disease this request can be denied. 3.Parents can not routinely bring children to uni and normally approval from lecture/supervisor is required. 4.Children are NOT allowed in lab areas. Electrical Safety Guidelines do not require laptop computers or mobile phones to be tested & tagged. Please check with your course convenor if you bring other personal electrical equipment onto campus as it may need to be tested and tagged. Policy Library
