Advanced Placement (AP) vs. Dual Credit (DC) What’s the difference?

Deadline to apply to Dual Credit program and submit all forms: February 13th

Description AP CollegeBoard’s AP Program allows students to take college-level courses to earn college level credit while still in high school. The award of credit depends on the score the student earns on the AP exam in May. DC Dual Credit allows students to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously at their high school. Awarding of college credit comes from a local community college (Northwest Vista College).

DC Juniors and Seniors can take 2 Dual Credit courses each year. Sophomores only 1. Students pay one-time fee of $15 for the TSI assessment

The Benefits English III AP/DC (Language) AP The student takes the English Language AP exam in May. Students need to check with their target college or university to see if the college will accept the AP score and what credit hours they will award. Colleges and universities grant the credit hours, not the AP program. DC The student attends class at the high school and completes assignments and exams. The student must earn a grade of 75 (2.0) or higher to receive college credit. Student earns credit for ENGL 1301 and ENGL 1302 (6 college credit hours) from NVC. credit/courses.htm

The Benefits Eng III AP/Dual or Eng IV Dual/Honors (a course equivalent to 6 college credit hours: ENGL 1301 & ENGL 1302) Community college (ex. NVC, SAC) – approx. $480.00* Public university (ex. UTSA, TAMU, Texas Tech) – approx. $ † Private university (ex. Plus, the student is awarded college credit hours from NVC for completing the class and with a 75 or higher. Student also does not have to take a standardized (or AP) test to receive college credit hours.
