Advanced Placement (AP) vs. Dual Credit (DC) What’s the difference?

Description AP CollegeBoard’s AP Program allows students to take college-level courses to earn college level credit while still in high school. The award of credit depends on the score the student earns on the AP exam in May. DC Dual Credit allows students to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously at their high school. Awarding of college credit comes from a local community college (Northwest Vista College).

The Trainers AP Teachers: – Certified teachers – Attend CollegeBoard sponsored AP trainings during the summer and school year
The Trainers DC Teachers: – Certified teachers – Completed and graduated from a Master’s Degree program – Apply to and are hired by Alamo Community College District (ACCD) as adjunct instructors – Have at least 18 graduate hours in the content area

DC Enrollment Process 1.Registration sheet – used to track all student information, phone numbers, scores and desired courses 2.AlamoENROLL – online application and required modules to complete (a.k.a. ApplyTexas online application) 3.Parent Consent Form – a requirement of ACCD 4.GoFAARR and TSI eligible scores – Determines eligibility to take college level courses. Can use PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP or TSI Assessment scores

Regulations AP Students can take as many AP courses as they wish. Students will be required to pay a portion of the exam cost (~$15-$20 per AP exam) Do not need to take the class to take the test in May. Pay full price of $91. DC Juniors and Seniors can take 2 Dual Credit courses each year. Sophomores only 1. Students pay one-time fee of $15 for the TSI assessment
The Benefits English III AP/DC (Language) AP The student takes the English Language AP exam in May. Students need to check with their target college or university to see if the college will accept the AP score and what credit hours they will award. Colleges and universities grant the credit hours, not the AP program. DC The student attends class at the high school and completes assignments and exams. The student must earn a grade of 75 (2.0) or higher to receive college credit. Student earns credit for ENGL 1301 and ENGL 1302 (6 college credit hours) from NVC. credit/courses.htm
The Benefits Eng III AP/Dual or Eng IV Dual/Honors (a course equivalent to 6 college credit hours: ENGL 1301 & ENGL 1302) Community college (ex. NVC, SAC) – approx. $480.00* Public university (ex. The Benefits Your GPA AP or pre-AP only 8 points per semester are added to the student’s Grade Point Average (GPA ) for each AP course taken. 5 points are added to each Pre-AP course and also effects the GPA. DC only 5 point are added to each semester. This is figured into the student’s GPA.
The 1 – 2 Punch AP and DC combined 8 points are added to each semester and affects the student’s GPA. Plus, the student is awarded college credit hours from NVC for completing the class and with a 75 or higher. Student also does not have to take a standardized (or AP) test to receive college credit hours.
