Faculty Senate Presentation on the proposed Office of Institutional Research and Sponsored Projects (OIRSP) John Killoran April 22, 2008

A brief history of the Teaching Research Institute (TRI)... Established in the early 1960’s as a Research & Development arm of OUS The Institute’s foundation was in educational research and instructional technology development...led to the genesis of Sesame Street Ongoing involvement in connecting teaching to learning, school improvement and teacher preparation, as well as educational research, development, and evaluation With the passage of EHA in 1975, TRI’s focus switched to special education This led to national prominence…initially in early childhood and services to students with deaf-blindness, and now also those with traumatic brain injuries In 1989 TRI was transferred from OUS to Western Oregon University under the Provost In August 2007 Director appointed to the President’s Staff

Simply stated TRI’s Mission is to… “…inform and facilitate change in educational and human service systems to improve the qualityof life for individuals…”

Our strategic plan calls for us to… …increase Institute capacity and viability… …establish efficient partnerships within TRI to maximize resources across projects… …expand services and increase revenues… …enhance partnerships with WOU… …strengthen and expand partnerships beyond WOU…

52 Faculty members in FY 08 with a Full Time Equivalent of –6 Senior Fellows/Full Research Professors (11.76%) –9 Associate Fellows/Research Professors (15.68%) –22 Assistant Fellows/Research Professor (43.13%) –11 Instructors/Program Assistants (21.56%) –4 Research Assistants/Project Assistants (7.84%)

Locations… Two Institute locations on WOU campus… –Todd Hall –Education Building One Institute office off-campus –Eugene, Oregon Four additional project locations … –Sands Point, New York –Boston, Massachusetts –Kansas City, Kansas –Knoxville, Tennessee

Today TRI’s projects… No longer are exclusive to Research but they also address… –Technical assistance, training and information –Program evaluation –Personnel preparation –Community services –Technology and data systems development

Each is supported by an infrastructure that includes “in-house”… 1.Administration 2.Fiscal Management and Business Services 3.Technology Support 4.Contract and Grant Development
